WIN FOR ALBION TEAM

hawera beaten by one goal. BOTH TEAMS BELOW STRENGTH. Considering the fact that both teams were below normal strength, the match on the New Plymouth racecourse in which Albion beat Hawera by one goal to nil was by no means dull. As the game developed it improved considerably, even though one or two showers made conditions unpleasant. Hawera was without the services of Sterling, who was injured in an accident that morning and this affected the combination. Albion had several junior players, but it must be said that they did very well, especially Clarke and Roberts. The teams were:— Albion: Rogers; Murdoch, Sturmey; Berry, Heatley, Nichol; Clarke, Upshall, Christensen, Roberts, Beatty. Hawera: Lobban; Longstaff, Chadwick; Griffin, Cockerill, Barker; Head, Campbell, Thompson, Frampton, Ogden. In the first spell Albion had the upper hand. When the game began Hawera penetrated, but Roberts trapped and passed to Clarke, Heatley and Upshall, the last-named taking the ball to halfway. Roberts and Berry performed a good piece of work, but the defence held. Upshall had a shot at goal, but Lobban punched out from the corner of the net. Hawera cleared beyond halfway, but Albion developed a forward movement, Upshall making a good run through to shoot from a good position and pen the score for his side. A brief Hawera rally was countered by another run through with Upshall in the lead. Upshall crossed Clarke; Clarke was about to shoot from a good position when Lobban ran out and cleared the ball from Clarke’s toe. Hawera had the better of the game in the second spell. Murdoch, Sturmey and Rogers being hard-pressed. Berry, who in combination with Roberts had performed well on attack was also a valuable asset to his side on defence. Despite their penetration, the Hawera forwards could not get goals owing to want of finish to their movements. Towards the end of the game Albion did better, Clarke, Christensen and Upshall several times testing the goalie. Albion 1 Hawera 0 Mi'. W. Johnston was the referee.
