ACTIVITIES OF BRANCHES Whareroa:—At the monthly meeting in the absence of Mrs. Larcom the chair was taken by Mrs. Nicholas, vice-presi-dent. There was an attendance of 33. The special effort donation to the federation this year was £1 10s. An interesting report on the doings at conference written by Mrs. Larcom was read by the secretary. One new member was received, Mrs. Crooks. Delegates to attend the grcmp committee meeting are Mesdames Nicholas and L. Hicks. Mrs. Nicholas expressed sympathy with Mrs. Larcom in the death of her brother. The exchange tall was supervised by Mrs. Christie and Miss Wilson. Mrs. Veitch gave an interesting and instructive demonstration in bandaging, Miss Betty Nicholas being the patient. A paper competition, tearing out a horse, was much enjoyed by all, the winners being: Mrs. Wells 1, Mrs. Crooks 2. The monthly competition was the best Madeira cake and successful competitors were: Mrs. Holloway 1, Miss Paterson 2, Mrs. Christie 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Shirtcliffe and Christie and Miss Thomlinson. Mrs. Douglas judged th 6 cake competition. Maxwell: There was a gbod attendance at the monthly meeting, Mrs. Morrison presiding. A demonstration of the making of posy bouquets was given by Mrs. Carpenter. Mr. Cox, “Carnatio,” gave an instructive talk on spring gardening. The baskets for competition were judged by Mesdames Robinson and Seddon, Wanganui, who placed Miss E. Morrison first, Mrs. Staite second and Miss L. Morrison third. The hostesses were Mesdames Harting, Dobie, Gorrall and E. Hughes. Motunui: In spite of the showery weather on Tuesday there was a very good gathering at the Motunui hall to celebrate the secon! birthday of the institute. Mrs. Knuck- , president, gave all a welcome, after which Misses N. Cole and G. Giddy gave a pianoforte duet, Mrs. Lockyer and Mrs. B. Rackley contributed humorous recitations and Miss Ince sang. Mrs. Reynolds played for community singing. Motunui school children gave two pleasing items. The junior members presented their one-act play, “Up Against It,” Cowper. The cast was Misses M. Greenwood, Z. Robinson, Mrs. L. Powell and Miss G. Giddy. The producer was Mrs. W. Jonas. Afternoon tea was served by members of the committee and the tables, were decorated in institute colours, yellow and green, the flowers used being daffodils, golden wattle and jonquils. Mrs. Knuckey, president, cut the birthday cake, first lighting the two candles which were extinguished by Mrs. Greenwood, past president. The cake was made by Mrs. Parli. Mrs. Knuckey received pretty posies from the presidents of the Waitara, Huirangi and Tikorangi institutes. Patea: The formation of an arts, and crafts circle was reported to a meeting of the committee of the institute. In connection with the circle it was decided to co-opt Mrs. J. A. Wither, president of the Whenuakura branch of the W.D.F.U. It was decided to recommend the institute to invite the federation to hold the annual council meeting at Patea in May. A tentative programme for the next seven months was prepared for submission to the general meeting." Mrs. A. A. Carey presided. Appreciation of the work of Mrs. W. G.P. Ingley was recorded, when her resignation was received. Mrs. Ingley leaves shortly for Wellington where she is to live. Waitara: The monthly meeting was held in St. John’s ’hall on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. Jury presiding over a large attendance. A floating bowl competition judged by Mrs. Gardner, Tikorangi, . was won by Mrs. Dowding. A demonstration .of papier mache work was given by Mrs. Pruden, Tikorangi. The hostesses were Mesdames Feaver, Turner, Barden and Jarvis. MANAIA SILVER WEDDING. MR. AND; MRS. O. T. BARRY. Neighbours and many old friends paid a surprise visit to Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Parry at their home, Manaia Road, Manaia, on Tuesday nigljt to extend good wishes and congratulations on the occasion of the couple’s silver wedding. The evening was pleasantly spent with music, cards and games. Mr. and Mrs. A. Bonetti and a number of their pupils gave instrumental items, and Messrs. A. Parry, L. Evans and H. Wills sang songs. Among those present were Mrs. Parkinson and Mr. J. T. Clague, who 25 years ago were bridesmaid and best man respectively. After supper Mr. S. J. .Bennett made a presentation of an elaborate tea waggon to. Mrs. Parry and a fountain pen to Mr. Parry. Several letters were received apologising for absence and expressing congratulations. Other speakers were Messrs. H. J. Berry, J. T. Clague, G. Butlei* and L. Evans. Mr. Parry was greeted with applause when he rose to reply. Mr. and Mrs. Parry were accorded musicaL. honours. AUROA KITCHEN TEA. A kitchen tea, tendered to Miss Buxton and Mi-. Norman Ashby, : brought a large gathering of friends to the Auroa hall on Monday night. Dancing was held to music provided by Mrs. Malcolm, Opunake. Extras were played by Misses E. O’Dea and U. West. The master of ceremonies was Mr. Robert Ord. Before supper Mrs. Benton asked the guests of the evening to accept the gifts from the residents of the district. Tribute to Mr. Norman Ashby’s spirit was paid by Mrs. Benton. On behalf of the Bible class Mr. R. Ord presented to Miss Buxton a case of silver spoons. Mr. Ashby replied. Surprise Party. A surprise party comprising about 20 members, organised by Misses Vera King and Myra Kirk visited Miss Molly Buxton on Friday night and spent an evening with games, competitions and community singing. Vocal items were given by Misses Joyce and Mary Lee, while Missed Rene and Myra Kirk played pianoforte duets. Mr. Bert Brown presented a sketch. Competitions were won by Misses Florrie Brown, Rene Kirk and Mr. Eric Brown. Before supper Mr. Leslie King asked Miss Buxton to accept two fruit dishes with wishes for future happiness. Mr. Norman Ashby expressed thanks.
