WIN FOR URENUI
WOMEN’S HOCKEY TOURNAMENT. MATCHES FOR GILMOUR CUP. At the women’s seven-a-side hockey tournament on the New Plymouth racecourse on Saturday Urenui won the Gilmour Cup with a total of eight points. Tariki and New Plymouth B tied for second place with seven points. New Plymouth A obtained six points and Y.W.C.A. A and Y.W.C.A. B one point each. Despite sodden grounds and heavy showers at intervals the tournament was particularly successful. The teams were not kept waiting for long periods and the hockey was of a good standard. Most of the games were hard and evenly contested and there was little between the four leading teams. Until the final matches the issue was in doubt. In presenting the cup to H. Trass, captain of Urenui, the Mayor, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, congratulated the team on its win. For many years he had refereed on various Taranaki fields, he said, and he had always found Urenui sociable and ready to do everything possible to help sport. Mr. Gilmour offered special congratulations to New Plymouth B, which had fielded a short team. Y.W.C.A. B, also played without a full team. Mrs. Trass thanked Mr. Gilmour for his donation of the cup and for going to the racecourse to present it. She also thanked the New Plymouth hockey enthusiasts who arranged the tournament. Cheers were given for the officials and the teams. Details of the matches are:— Urenui 3 beat Y.W.C.A. A 0. New Plymouth B 3 beat Y.W.C.A. A 0. Urenui 1 beat New Plymouth A 0. Urenui 4 beat Y.W.C.A.
