PLANTING OF TREES

WASTE AREAS IN ELTHAM PARK. DECISION OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. A suggestion to use an area of waste land at the Soldiers’ Memorial Park for the planting of trees was made by Cr. Fake at the monthly meeting _of the Eltham Borough Council last night. Cr. Trask supported the proposal and pointed out that certain of the trees already planted were not of the most suitable type. The Mayor explained that the trees had been received from the ForestryDepartment free of charge. He agreed with the suggestion to plant as large an area possible. . Cr. Trask emphasised the point that he found no fault with the gums already planted, but he objected to the macrocarpas planted amongst the gums. On Cr. Fake’s motion the reserves committee was recommended to plant suitable trees in the waste areas of the reserve. Cr. Lehrke asked why, tenders had not been called for firewood for the tarboiler. x

The Mayor replied that it was not customary to call tenders' for such small requirements. Cr. Lehrke said he understood the quantity was about 10 cords. Would he have an opportunity of speaking on the subject? he asked. The Mayor said Cr. Lehrke could obtain the figures from the office and bring the matter up later if he desired. The Taranaki Rugby Union advised that a match between Taranaki and South Auckland had been allocated to Eltham. The Mayor (Mr. I. J. Bridger) expressed satisfaction with the decision of the union and commended Mr. Whiting, the local member of the Rugby Union committee, for his efforts in bringing to notice the claims of Eltham. A request for support for the health stamp campaign to raise funds for children in country health camps received support from the council, the clerk being authorised to purchase £1 worth of health stamps for use din-ing the campaign. Permission was given the health committee to take up a street collection on October 4 for the children’s health movement. Last month was a record for the output of gas for many years, said Cr. Lewis, chairman of the gasworks committee. The gas manager was carrying out a campaign to popularise the use of gas. The Mayor said it was proposed to encourage the use of gas and make the works pay as well as possible.
