HARRE. \ An erijoyable social, arranged by the Riverlea Women’s Institute, was held ,on Tuesday. ■ Opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs. Harre who is leaving the district. Mrs. Hughes, president, thanked Mrs. Harre for what she had done for the district, in starting the Women’s Institute movement, and presented her with a cut crystal fruit bowl. Miss Minnie Kenyon presented a foouquet to Mrs. Harre who suitably replied. Miss Lucy Lavell presented Mrs. Hughes with a bouquet. The following items were given between dances; Song, Mrs. D. Benton; mouth organ trio, McLeod brothers; part song, Kaponga Women’s Institute glee singers; duet, Mesdames and Pascoe; one-act play, “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” Misses Jean Southern, Lucy Lavell and Minnie Kenyon.

Music for the dances was played by Mrs. Evans with extras by Mrs. Pascoe, and Mr. Bill Mowatt on the accordion. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. M. Eves and J. Hey. A euchre tournament occupied the non-dancers, the prizes going to Mrs. Rothe and Mi - . V. Flack. Despite the weather a successful Arbor Day was held in the Riverlea school grounds on Wednesday. Twice in the past few weeks, members of the school committee, reinforced by other willing workers, have had working-bees in' preparation for the day. Mr. Rod Syme was in attendance and gave an interesting pruning demonstration. A small orchard of mixed trees was planted in the new school garden.

Mr. Harre, the head teacher, who is shortly to be transferred, planted a tree in memory of his long stay at the school. A hedge of escalonia was planted by the side of the Women’s Institute’s plot. 11113 part of the grounds presented a busy scene as the women were planting native trees in the section of the grounds set aside for that purpose. The school committee had other schemes of planting in mind but the weather very effectively put a stop to further activities. The afternoon was brought to a close by afternoon tea in the hall dispensed by the Women’s Institute. The children gave a part song and an elocutionary item was given by Shirley Flack. Speeches were made by Mr. Chapman, chairman of the school committee, and Mr. Syme.
