NEW PLYMOUTH

Mrs. J. O. Bennett is visiting Palmerston North. ’ Mrs. G. H. Stephenson, .who has. been spending a holiday at Tauranga and Auckland, returned to. New Plymouth this week. Miss Jessie Home and Miss B. E. Campbell motored to Auckland on Thursday to spend a few days. Miss- B. McLean has arrived from Wanganui to stay with Mrs. C. Linwood. Miss Barbara Humphreys will leave to-day to spend a holiday of several weeks at Kawhia. Mrs. H. G. Skeet arrived from Wanganui during the week to take up residence at New Plymouth. She is at present spending the week-end at Wanganui. Mrs. H. Cowling has left for a holiday at Wanganui and will go later to Wellington. Mrs. C. Stewart, Hawera, is spending the week-end with ’ her mother, Mrs. J. H; Ashton. Miss Olwyn / Griffiths, who has been at Dunedin for several months, is now staying at Wanganui. Miss A. Terry returned on Tuesday from a visit to Wanganui. Mrs. F, H. Waters entertained at an afternoon party at her home on Wednesday. Miss M. Jenkins, Auckland; Botting, Auckland. Morning Tea. Mrs. P. F.. Atkinson and Miss Ernestine Fopkes were joint hostesses at a delightful morning tea party yesterday in honour of Miss Nina Nolan. The party was held in the lounge of the Women’s Club which was gay with bbwls of amber and gold poppies and jonquils, arranged with sprays of fruit blossom. Mrs. Atkinson wore a smart suit of grey and white tweed with small black hat and Miss Fookes’ frock of i reseda green was worn with touches of brown and a brown velour hat. Following tea, Miss Nolan, in a tailored Suit of fawn and brown, with- brown hat, opened -many packages of handkerchiefs and bathroom gifts. , Bridge Evening. : , Miss Ettie Grover, -in a dainty frock of green and white organdie, was ; hostess on Wednesday night at a very enjoyable party in honour of Miss Nina Nolan. Miss Nolan- wore-■ a frock ; of taffetas in a rich 'burgundy shade, trimmed with niching. Bowls of anemones, and daffodils were arranged in, the rooms. The evening was spent in .playing bridge, the winner being Miss C. Moyes. The . prize for a competitionWas won' by Mrs. C. Linwood. •' Taranaki Women’s Club. Large bowls of deep pink rhododendrons and mixed bowls of prunus and. poppies were attractively arranged in' the lounge of the Taranaki Women’s Club on Wednesday when the members of the bridge circle entertained the gentlemen at a bridge evening. The guests were received by the president, Mrs. S. C. Allen; who was wearing a handsome frock of midnight blue velvet, with touches of gold lame. After play the prizes were awarded to Mrs. J. W. Harvey and Mr. F. S. Johns, who tied for highest score. Farewell Party.

Mrs. G. E. Cartwright was entertained at a morning tea yesterday given by Mrs. B. E. Whitcombe. Teacher Goes Abroad. Miss Joan Feafn, who, left. New Plymouth yesterday for Auckland, will sail' to-day by the Ruahine .on an 18 months’ trip abroad, part of the time to be. spent in further musical studies. ' Yesterday morning her colleagues. on the teaching staff of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School presented Miss Feaiyi with a set of pawa shell salt cellars. The principal, Miss D. N. Allan, referred appreciatively to Miss Fearn’s work for the school and wished her a pleasant voyage. In the afternoon Miss Feam was farewelled by the( pupils, on whose . behalf Agnes Aburn, head prefect, made. a presentation of books. The Fitzroy auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society met recently when subscriptions were handed in by Collectors amounting to £l4 2s 9d. The collectors were Mrs. ,L. E. Collins, Mrs. Jordan, Mrs. W. H. Aburn, Miss E. M. Young, Miss D. Williamson, Miss E. Symons, Miss K. Gould, Rev. J. D. Grocott, Mr. J. Short and Mrs. L. Chivers (secre- • tary). Mrs. H. Gould presided. .

The social committee of the Fitzroy school committee met at. the home of Mrs. R. Kibby on Tuesday to farewell Mrs. J. D. Robb, who is leaving shortly to live at Dunedin. Items were given by Mrs. S. Kibby, Miss E. Burr, Beryl Kibby and Master D. Kibby. Mrs. Voullaire presented Mi's. Robb with a crystal vase and said the committee regretted her departure and wished her every happiness. MARSDEN SCHOOL DANCE. V * NEW PLYMOUTH GATHERING. A successful dance was that held last night in the Fitzroy hall by Marsden Old Girls at New Plymouth. In the hall wattle blossom made soft masses of colour, and the supper-room, golden with spring flowers in great brass bowls, was decorated on the same scheme. Streamers of blue and green, the Marsden school colours, draped the ceiling. The chairwoman of the committee, Mrs. S. C. Allen, to receive the guests was wearing a dress of salmon pink brocaded moire. The chaperones were Mesdarnes E. Griffiths (apple green panne velvet), G. Fraser (black and silver) and L. R. Curtis (Marina blue panne velvet). The committee controlling the dance comprised Mesdarnes K. Tompkins, R. Millward and Misses N. Griffiths, C. Fraser and A. Atkinson. Vinsen’s Ambassadors Band was engaged. •
