MANAIA METHODISTS
ANNUAL BIBLE CLASS SOCIAL. A popular and successful function took place in the town hall, Manaia, on Wednesday night, when the Manaia Methodist Bible class held its third annual social. Visitors were present from Okaiawa, Eltham, Kaponga, Oeo Road, Opunake, Oaonui, Rahotu. and Manaia Presbyterians. i Games and competitions occupied most of the evening. Items were given by the following: Instrumental quartettes, Oaonui’ Bible class and the Silby family; songs, Okaiawa young men and Mr. H. Wards as “an old-timer”; recitation, “The Deacon’s Potatoes,” Miss Wright, Opunake. Mr. E. M. Marshall and the Rev. H. Cottom were masters of ceremonies, and Mrs. D. Williams and Miss M. Silby, pianists. The visitors were welcomed by Mr. Marshall and responses were made by Mr. R. Hughson, Opunake, Mr. H. Wards, Okaiawa, J. Harding, Kaponga, and the Revs. H. Spencer and A. R. Penn. After supper and the singing of the camp chorus, the Rev. H. Spencer concluded the meeting. GENERAL ITEMS. Lecture on Microscopes. An interesting lecture on the construction and uses of microscopes was delivered to a good assembly of members at the August meeting of the, Hawera Astronomical Society by Mr; J. M. Townsend, who gave a practical demonstration of the differences in powers and construction of several microscopes. Trout at Kaponga. A practical demonstration of the good work being accomplished by the Hawera Acclimatisation Society in stocking the South Taranaki trout streams can be witnessed in the Kaupokonui River where, it flows through Kaponga. In a deep tool on the outskirts of the town there are five very large brown trout; these fish, despite the many and varied allurements offered by local fishermen continue to inhabit the pool, obtaining ample food supplies from the refuse of a nearby dairy factory.
