HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS’ DANCE. The Opunake Red Cross Society concert on Wednesday night was well patronised by the public and the funds would benefit to the extent of £2O according to the president, Mr. H. J. Mantey, when he returned thanks to the public and to the performers. The concert was organised by Mrs. J. Morris, who was presented with a bouquet. The programme was an entertaining one. The overture was played by Mrs. T. N. Watt (violin), Messrs. W. D. Richards (piano), C. Humphries (cornet), P. Harding (trombone), D. Watt (violin). Other items were: Solo, Miss W. Murray; song and dance, “Happy Hikers,” soloists. Thelma Coad and Shirley Marcroft; solo, “Play to Me Gypsy,” Willie Holland; recitation, comic, Ernest Scott; songs, “Rose of Tralee” and “Mother Machree,” Miss C. Darragh; pianoforte solo, Mendelssohn’s “Spring Song,” Miss M. Taylor; single speciality act, impersonations of old-time actors and authors, Mr. J. Quealy; dance duo, “The Elf and the Pink Rose Fairy,” Mena Morris and Rae Fraser; solo, “Land of Hope and Glory,” Mrs. Weatherhead; ballet, “Isle of Capri.” Joyce Whiting and Mavis Coad, with Spanish dancing girls; one act play, “Just a Little Bit of Life,” Misses N. Perry, M. Byars. K. Julian and Harry Johnstone; “The Crooket Bawbee,” Mrs. Weatherhead and Mr. Dawson; solo, “String Along with You,” Willie Holland; solo, “Love’s a Merchant,” Miss W. Murray; dance, “Soldiers of the King,” military maidens. Mr. W. D. Richards played the accompaniments. On Thursday evening a dance, organised by the high school pupils, to which the parents and old pupils were invited, was held in St. Patrick’s hall. Mrs. C. Malcolm provided the music, Miss A. Coombe playing an extra. Norman Des Forges and George Byars were masters of ceremonies. The lucky spot dance was won by Miss E. Fraser and Mr. M. Brennan. Supper was set out on prettily decorated tables., The supper arrangements were attended to by a committee of high school girls under the supervision of Miss McCrae. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The annual plain and fancy dress ball of the Alton Tennis Club will be held on Tuesday. Hooker’s Merrymakers will supply the music. Two dancing competitions will be held and several novelties. The Hawera Football Club will hold a dance in St. Joseph’s hall, Hawera, on Wednesday, September 18. The Hawera Pipe Band will hold a long-night dance in the winter show buildings on Monday. Particulars are advertised. Smith and Trim Ltd. advertise particulars of mart sales for to-day of fruit, vegetables, plants, etc., at 11, and poultry,' including Black Orpington laying pullets, seed potatoes, Federal battery radio,, furniture an balance of general wear, remnants and shoes, at 1.30 p.m. A grand final Swiss dance is to be 1 held at Mangatoki Hall on Tuesday next. There will be cards , and novelty dances with good prices for both. Everybody is ,■ welcomed. GRACIE FIELDS AT KAPONGA.
