The acting-Prime Minister, Sir Alfred Ransom, left Dunedin yesterday doming for Wellington, reports the Press Association.
Tlie appointment of Dr. R. L. G. Barclay as divisional Surgeon of the Waitara division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade has been approved by the chief commissioner for the Dominion. The sudden death of Mr. A. V. Hiskins, secretary of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club, is reported by cable from Melborne.
Lord Bridgeman, a former First Lord of the Admiralty, who retired from politics in 1929 after an active political career of 40 years, and who became chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation only a few months ago, died at the age of 71 years at his home in the country after weeks’ illness, states a British Official Wireless message. A keen cricketer and an “Old Blue,” Lord Bridgeman was president of the M.C.C. in 1931.
The death occurred at Thames bn Wednesday of Mr. John Blair Welsh, aged 92 years, who, it is claimed was the oldest of the remaining early Thames settlers. Mr. Welsh led a rbaming life during his early years, and spent some time at sea. He came to New Zealand while still a young man, landing _at Auckland. He was engaged in mining at Thames shortly after the discovery of gold there, being among the first batch of miners to arrive on the field when it was opened in 1867. He became a prominent member of the Salvation Army, and was well known for many years as standard bearer, a position that he filled until recently.
