Brilliant cricket was played by the South African opening batsmen in the match against Surrey to-day, and at the drawing of stumps Mitchell and Rowan were undefeated for a total of 272 runs, the scores being 122 and 146 respectively. The runs were put on in three hours. Surrey batted first and was out. for 183. A splendid ninth wicket partnership between Fishlock and Brooks saved the innings from being a rout.' Fishlock batted for 110 minutes. E. R. T. Holmes, who is to captain the M.C.C. team in New Zealand, was bowled by Vincent for 10.
