Brilliant cricket was played by the South African opening batsmen in the match against Surrey to-day, and at the drawing of stumps Mitchell and Rowan were undefeated for a total of 272 runs, the scores being 122 and 146 respectively. The runs were put on in three hours. Surrey batted first and was out. for 183. A splendid ninth wicket partnership between Fishlock and Brooks saved the innings from being a rout.' Fishlock batted for 110 minutes. E. R. T. Holmes, who is to captain the M.C.C. team in New Zealand, was bowled by Vincent for 10. Vincent and Langton shared the bowling honours, each taking four wickets. The scores are:— SURREY. First Innings.
