PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr. H. Betts senr., Okaiawa, who is in his 99th year, is seriously ill. Mr. V. M. Gerrand, who has been manager at Hawera for several years of the business of J. B. Gerrand and Sons, left yesterday to enter the firm’s Palmerston North business. Before his departure he was presented by the staff at Hawera with a photograph of Mount Egmont, with which he has been closely associated. He was also presented with a travelling rug by the members of St. John’s Gymnastic Club in recognition of his services as instructor for several years. Fellow Rotarians bade him farewell at last week’s luncheon and wished him success in his new sphere. Mr. J. M. Gerrand succeeds his brother as manager of the Hawera business. GENERAL ITEMS. Only One Bankruptcy. There was only one bankruptcy at Hawera during the month, compared with five during the same period last year. Rainfall at Manaia. Rain fell at Manaia on 24 days during July, with a total of 6.03 inches for the month. This brings the fall to date this year to 45.14 in., against an average annual rainfall of just over 41 inches for the past eight years.
