VISCOSE SILK
MADE RAYON POSSIBLE. Tire discoverer of the material which made possible artificial silk stockings has recently passed away in his 80th year. He* was Mr. Charles Cross, and his great discovery was viscose silk, made from cellulose zanfhate, which is formed when wool pulp is treated with carbon bisulphide. . As Sir Joseph Swan.had done in discovering the first form of artificial silk ten years before, Charles Cross, in 1892, forced his jelly-like material through a tiny hole to form a solid thread. He used a bicycle pump for this purpose in his tiny laboratory in New Square. Holborn. To-day thousands of spinnerets are making this silk, of which a million tons I are produced every year. J
