BOROUGH OF ELTHAM

WATER SUPPLY VALVE BLOCKED. TROUBLE WITH THE SEWERAGE. Reporting to the Eltham Borough Council last night the overseer, Mr. J. H. Williams, stated that the water system maintained the usual supply. If the filtration system were put in working order, the staff would be relieved of the need for an all-night vigil. z The valve became completely blocked during the month, but the filters maintained all requirements. During freshes in the stream septictanks were flushed out and cleaned. The sewerage pipe across the Conway Road bridge filling and the effluent pipe from the septic tank to the flushing tanks at the York Street site were causing trouble. A slip occurred on the bank of the stream in the children’s park and concrete slabs placed in position to prevent further erosion. The clearing of the Mangawhero Stream was suspended owing to wet weather. There were 44 men on unemployment relief. The traffic inspector, Mr. A. E. Lethbridge said a check of motor drivers’ licenses revealed only two motorists who had not renewed. A check for bicycles without lights had not revealed any offenders. It was intended to check motorcar brakes. Notices were sent to owners of property, water from which was

damaging the footpaths. Public halls !were inspected and licenses issued where the buildings complied with the by-laws. Two halls were not re-licensed pending the carrying out of repairs. All heavy traffic licenses were renewed . and the fees paid. During the month 181 drivers’ licenses were issued. Only two head • of wandering stock were impounded. The inspection of the water supply had not been completed and a full report was not yet available. General maintenance was carried out by the reserves caretaker, Mr. W. H. Reynolds, the principal work being the trimming of macrocarpa hedges, tile planting of escallonia north of the basketball ground and near the track leading to the river, and the digging of a ' trench in preparation for the planting of I I a live hedge on the riverbank where | pine trees had. been cut. Trees in the Soldiers’ Memorial Park were cleaned ■ and flower beds in the railway reserve were dug. The cemetery plots were ; cleaned up and gaps in hedges were fill- s ed with, plants. h The report of the health inspector, Mr. j R. Gooding, indicated a further period of freedom from infectious diseases. j The treasurer, Mr. A. J. MacPherson, 1 reported that £1092 was received and < £1786 spent during the month.' The r committee reported that the chairman t had. been authorised to procure sufficient timber when available for extra sealing o: / at Taumata Park. n Cr. A. G. Whiting pointed out that tl 1 f<

the sealing at the park was not sufficient when there was a big gathering. The reserves committee reported that the Taranaki Rugby Union would be advised that seating for 2000 people would be available if suitable fixtures were arranged. The finance committee reported that fresh arrangements had been made with the library-, committee whereby the council would assume responsibility for the reading room. It would supply free gas to the library department and make a contribution of £5 for reference books. Mr. R. Hodgen had been appointed reading room attendant. The Mayor explained that the new arrangements would be a great benefit. Cr. Lewis suggested that the reading room be improved by putting material on the floor to deaden noise and by providing better lighting and making the room cosier. The Mayor said better lighting had been arranged. He considered the library committee had done good work with the money at its disposal. Cr. Lewis said he cast no reflection on the library committee. It was in the matter of natural lighting that he thought an improvement could be effected.

The Mayor replied that the windows had been frosted and other improvements were being made to the paper racks. The inspector was authorised to mark a ring in Bridge Street for the SalvaI tion Army. Cr. J. H. Fake’s suggestion to conI crete the erosion repairs in the creek bank at the children’s park was referred Ito the reserves committee for attention. There were present the Mayor (Mr. I. J.
