“COMPARISON UNFAIR”

RACING IN SISTER DOMINIONS. LICENSING OF THE BOOKMAKER. Comparisons between racing in New Zealand and in Australia were being made on an unfair basis, asserted Mr. S. Pitt at the annual meeting of the Stratford Racing Club tost night. Mr. Pitt pointed out that Sydney alone had a. population nearly as large as that of New Zealand, and Melbourne was also a very large centre of population. He was convinced that to license bookmakers in New Zealand would be the worst day’s work that could be done. The totalisator was the foundation of racing in New Zealand and its mainstay. Outside visitors said the racing compared very favourably with that in any other country in the world. “Racing in New Zealand is not on the wane,” Mr. Pitt said. “New Zealanders have two sports—racing in the summer and football in the winter.”
