BRIDGING A GULF

GIFT OF INDIAN MERCHANT. The Indians in South Africa have suffered much injustice and rude treatment at the hands of the Europeans, and it is therefore all the more pleasurable to know that a rich Indian merchant, Mr. Mahomed Ibrahim Lakhi, has presented the Europeans of Greytown with a sports ground and a pavilion. A good deal of the credit for this gesture of goodwill goes to Sir Maharaj Singh, Agent to the Government of India in Africa, who during his term of office tried to bridge the gulf between the races. Though he has now returned to India, almost the last public function he attended was to lay tire foundationstone of the new pavilion in the presence of a great company of Indians and Europeans.
