FIELD COMPETITIONS
ROOT CROP CLASS WINNERS. MR. H. T. PAUL A WINNER AGAIN. No difficulty had been experienced in the judging of the root crop competitions in North Taranaki, Mr. Gordon Elliott, instructor of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, informed a meeting of the field competition committee yesterday. Mr. H. T. Paul, Okato, won the mangold competition with 149 tons lOcwt, compared with his winning yield of 176 tons last year. The carrot competition was won by Mr. W. J. Bridgeman, Okato, with a yield o* 63 tons 16 cwt., compared with 74 tons 16cwt. produced by Mr. J. H. Paulger (Tikorangi) last year. Tire swede competition was won by Mr. D. Johnston (Toko) with a yield of 61 tons 17cwt. Mr. H. K. Nowell (Cardiff) won this section last year with a yield of 78 tons scwt. Mr. Elliott intimated that he had commenced judging the hay and ensilage competitions on the scale of points used last year. He did not think the judging would be completed before the end of August , The Farmers’ Co-op., New Plymouth, advised that the manufacturers of Cooper’s seeds were prepared to donate a cup for competition in North Taranaki. The cup would carry with it trophies valued at £2 10s, which would be given for competition in the branches. It was agreed that the waste in the front of hillside stacks of ensilage should not be taken into account when judging.
