COMPETITION FOR FAT SHEEP. EWES MEET A FAIR DEMAND. Wanganui, July 10. At the Wanganui sale to-day Freeman R. Jackson and Co. had a good entry in all sections. Fat sheep were Is to Is 6d above last week, with store sheep unchanged. Breeding ewes are wanted at up to about 22s 6d, but past this figure, irrespective of quality, sales are hard to make. Any old class of ewe, provided she is showing well forward, will make in the vicinity of 20s, while better class and young sheep are neglected. The fat cattle were a poor lot, but sold well at late rates. The few store cattle yarded were only oddments and an almost total clearance was effected. A better yarding of dairy stock was forward, with a decided improvement in prices. Pigs sold well, all classes of stores again being keenly competed for. Vealers sold at late rates. Sheep: Prime ewes, 17s 3d to 18s; fat ewes, 14s lOd to 16s 7d; prime hoggets, 19s to 23s 9d; light hoggets, 16s to 18s 6d; m.a. ewes, mated Down rams, 22s Id to 23s 7d; full-mouth ditto, 21s to 22s 4d; aged ditto, 16s 6d; medium ewe hoggets, 17s 3d to 18s; wether hoggets to 16s 2d; gull hoggets, 7s 6d to 9s 6d; cull empty ewes, 5s 6d. Cattle: Prime ex dairy cows, £4 10s to £5 2s 6d; fat ditto, £3 5s to £4 ss; light fat cows £2 5s to £3; boner cows, 17s 6d to 30s; bulls, £2 10s to £4; yearling Jersey heifers, small, 17s 6d to 31s; vealers, fair, 30s to 40s; vealers, small, 20s to 27s 6d; runners to £3. Young dairy cows, due July-August, £4 5s to £6 10s; ditto, due September, £2 to £3 15s; aged cows, early calvers, £3 5s to £4 ss; ditto, backward, £1 15s to £3; good cows in milk to £6; ditto, heifers to £5 ss; backward heifers, none sold. Pigs: Heavy porkers, 32s to, 36s 6d; porkers, 25s 6d to 30s; stores, 18s to 22s 6d; good slips, 16s to 20s; poor slips, 10s to 14s; good weaners, 13s to 15s.
