STUART WILSON CUP

AWARDED FOR CARROT CROPS. CRITICISM OF ALLOCATION. Dissatisfaction with the terms of award of the Stuart Wilson Cup for competition in carrot growing among the boys and girls’ clubs of New Zealand was expressed by the executive of the South Taranaki Association on Saturday, and it was decided to write to the Department of Agriculture to request a set of conditions of the award. The question arose particularly through the. award last year to an Otago pupil who grew a crop of 88 tons Bcwt. when Jean Williams, Meremere, broke a New Zealand record with a crop of 100 tons 19cwt. Previous correspondence had revealed that the award was made because of the winning crop being grown in poor soil, but Saturday’s meeting considered that it was possible, in any district or on any farm, to find a plot of great fertility. The site of a disused pigsty was mentioned as an instance.
