MONTHLY MEETINGS OF CLUBS.

A busy period has been experienced this week at the Y.W.-Y.M.C.A. building at New Plymouth. About 30 members of' the Y.W.Y.M.C.A. women’s auxiliary werq entertained on Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. S. Gilmour, Fitzroy. The president, Mrs. F. Carter, introduced Mr. E. C. Simpson, Wellington, who gave a talk on wood cuts, showing slides of work done as long ago. as the 13th century. ' , A small gathering representative of business and professional women met at Community House on. Wednesday night to discuss the re-formation - and expansion of the old Round Table Club. Miss M. Greenwell, general secretary, presided. '

The chairman outlined the development of the Y.W.C.A. throughout its history until it had now readied the stage of including different groups of women in the community. The New Zealand brganisation had made possible the inclusion of business and professional women in its membership. At New Plymouth the branch had formed Round Table clubs during the past two years and it was now felt the time had come to continue this activity on more comprehensive lines. Mrs. M. M. Arthur was willing to direct and plan the programme for the club. Mrs. Arthur offered suggestions for a programme to include social relaxation and discussion on art, literature, music and vital social problems. An interesting feature of the proposed activities was the holding of “municipal” teas where heads of various departments of the borough would outline the nature of their duties. \

Members expressed appreciation of Mrs. Arthur’s suggestion and eagerness to participate in the club’s activities. Meetings will be held fortnightly. The first regular meeting,of the busi- ■ ness girls’ Lyceum was held on Thursday night, Miss M. Greenwell presiding over a good attendance. Proceedings were .conducted on a scheme modelled on that of old Greece. ' Games and competitions were adapted' in accordance and a dramatisation of the Greek lyceum was given by the committee, The cast was dressed in Grecian robes and the stage was decorated to give the impression of the green, covered walks of Athens. .

The players were headed by Miss J. ' North as Aristotle. Others were Misses F. Dew, B. Governlock, I. and M. Jasper and C. Hardy. At the meeting the Dominion constitution was adopted and the acting-presi-dent, Miss M. Barlow, and her committee were elected for the ensuing year. The meeting ended with community singing. Miss A. Wilson sang and Miss M. Barlow accompanied. Two new members, Mrs, McDonald, Bell Block, and Mrs. Thompson were welcomed yesterday afternoon at the monthly “at home” of the Young Women’s Club. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Masters, L. Mander, H. Quickfall.'and C. Haughton. Miss Greenwell was chairman. • ■ • j The proceedings included the continuation of a series of lectures on child psychology by Mr. J. H. Ledgerwood. Mrs. Rugby Hawkins sang and Mr. Fredrie' accompanied her.' Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. : Mrs. Mander had decorated Alexander Hall with yellow jonquils and maidenhair. fern. Officers elected were: President, Mrs. Masters; vice-president, Mrs. Haughton; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Quickfall; committee, Mesdames R.’ Lealand, Mander, Tingey, McLean, Croll; conveners, Mesdames Dalrymple and May. Two. guessing competitions arranged by the younger Y.W.C.A, girls have been decided. Winners are: Original oil painting by Miss Joan Wood, Mr. M. J. . Neville; cushion cover by Mahetika group, Mrs. G« M. Beatty, Nobs’ Line.
