The appearance of a Budget surplus anywhere is still sufficiently unusual to excite comment. The Financial Times finds cause for special satisfaction in New Zealand’s enviable position. “New Zealand,” it says, “has always striven to comply with the strict canons of sound finance. It is idle to say New Zealand has no trade troubles, but there is much in its financial state to promote the confidence of investors.”
