Mrs. J. D. Tait, president of the Hawera branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs. H, E. Cressey, secretary, and Mrs. W. Hamilton attended a provincial conference of the society held at Stratford on Friday afternoon. Wearing a pretty frock of dark leghorn blue, Miss L. Hay-MacKenzie was hostess kt tea on Friday afternoon, when Mesdames C. Tonics, C. H. Washer, J. B. Murdoch, L. J. Bull, Livermore (Taihape), Misses J. MacDonald and M. C. Power were her guests. Mrs. L. J. Bull, wearing a frock of black georgette, welcomed a few friends to tea on Saturday afternoon in honour of her guest, Mrs. Livermore, Taihape. Mrs. Livermore’s frock was fashioned in deep wine georgette and lace, and Mrs. Bull’s sister, Miss N. Watty, wore a brown and gold afternoon gown. Mesdames Symes, W. F. Buist, C.' Tonks, C. Bayley, D. G. Smart and Miss Symes were the other guests present. At ■ the first of the Music Teachers’ Association’s monthly social evenings in the Carlton Rooms last Thursday, there was a good attendance, and an enjoyable programme, consisting of choral numbers by the Presbyterian choir (Mr. C. Lamb, conductor), a group of Chopin numbers played on the piano by Miss A. Curtis, ’cello solos by Miss Iris Lawson, songs by Mr. S. Horsburgh and duets by Mr. and Miss Lamb, was presented. An interesting paper on Chopin was prepared by Miss W. Thomas and read by Miss C. Reilly.

Chrysanthemums, 1 autumn foliage and berries made pretty decorations at Mrs. Symes’ hbme recently, When a famjly surprise party visited her daughter, Miss Symes, and herself in honour of her birthday, and a very jolly party resulted. A beautifully iced and ornamented birthday cake, made by Mrs. Hawken, was cut at supper. Mrs. Symes was gowned in black, with satin coatee, and Miss Symes wore a-figured frock and matching coat. Mesdames Alan Evans and H. G. Whitehead were the conveners for the open progressive bridge night at the Women’s Club on Friday when there were eight tables in play. The highest score was gained by Mrs. W. W. Thomas, and Miss Harvey, (Christchurch) and Mrs. Riddle (Eltharn) tied for the hidden number prize, the latter winning the draw. Mrs. Whitehead’s bridge frock of bottle green phantom crepe whs trimmed with self pleatings, and Mrs. Evans wore a wineberry red silk lace ensemble. The players present included Mesdames C. A pleasant evening was spent at the residence of Mrs. H. Cameron, Tempsky Road, Okaiawa, recently in honour of Miss M. Giacometti, who is shortly to be married. Cards were played, the winners being Mrs. Rae 1, lucky number Mrs. Penny; Mr. Sutherland 1. A putting competition was won by Miss C. Sutherland and Mr. G. Good. Mrs. Good, on behalf of the Women’s Institute, made a presentation to Miss Giacometti of a salad set, and wished her good luck. Miss D. Good presented the guest with a novel bouquet. Popular Resident Farewelled. The last week prior to Mrs. G. W. Powdrell’s leave-taking was a busy one, as from . Wednesday onwards practically every morning, afternoon and night there were engagements. Popularity may be a pleasurable nuisance some times. The green and wineberry red setting of the club reception- room was set off on Saturday afternoon with bowls of lavender blue stylosas, framed in fern, and large jars of viburnum and' sweet briar beh-ies and bright-painted leaves, when Mrs. W. A. Duckworth entertained a number of friends at a farewell tea in Mrs. Powdrell’s honour. The hostess’ frock of silk crepe fleurite in tonings of green, white and black, was worn under a seven-eighths coat of stylish cut in black marocain, and her black hat was brightened with a chromium novelty pin. The guest of honour’s neatly cut kasha cloth frock of heath green was smartly set off with nickel buttons, and she wore a stitched hat of deer beige. Miss Nancy Duckworth, who assisted her mother at tea, wore a pretty frock in the new crepe corday, designed in brown and white, and featuring frills of brown knife-pleat-ing. Mrs. Powdrell’s neatly cut gown was fashioned in rust red nigger and I white plaid taffetas. Club arranged a Yankee tournament and social afternoon on Thursday at which there were about 20 members present to farewell Mrs. Powdrell, to whom a presentation was made. Mrs. L. Norman won the tournament.
