AUROA DISTRICT NEWS

PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Mrs. J. J. O’Dea and Miss Annie O’Dea have returned from a holiday at Christchurch and Palmerston North. Mr. C. J. O’Dea has resumed duties at the Kohuratahi school after an extended holiday in the South Island. Miss Kissick, New Plymouth, has been the guest of Miss Eileen O’Dea. Mr. Noel West, Te Awamutu, is the guest of his relatives, Mr. and Mrs. A. T. West, Auroa Road.

Mr. and Mrs. Hey, Hawera, are coming to settle on their farm at Auroa. Three nephews of Mr. S. C. Davies, Messrs. Lawrence Davies, Paeroa, William Davies, Kawhia, and Dick Davies, Pirongia, sons of the late Mr. John Davies, have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Davies and renewing old friendships in Taranaki. Mr. and Mrs. Peart will take up farming at Riverlea at the end of this month.

Mr. and Mrs. Warren are to move down Auroa Road to Mr. Geonotti’s farm. Miss Edna Flavin left on Friday for Hamilton to continue her school teaching duties. Miss Olive Flavin left on Saturday for Tangarakau to resume teaching. A party of motorists, including Miss Griffin and Messrs. H. Sanderson and R. Smith, is touring the Wellington and Lower Hutt districts. Mrs. Woodhead has improved considerably in health since her severe illness. Mr. and Mrs. F. Hughes and Mr. C. Evans have returned from a motor tour of the Morrinsville, Rotorua and Waitomo Caves districts. While at Morrinsville they were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Donald and Mr. J. J. Patterson, old-time residents of Auroa. Mrs. Whalen has been visiting Mrs. F. Hughes. Miss Williamson has returned from a holiday spent at Patea and at Feilding. Miss F. Brown has returned from a holiday spent at Okato. Mr. Clarence Whiting has been the guest of Mrs. Whiting, Rowan. Mrs. Wheeler is the guest of Mrs. F. Greenbanks. Mr. Billy Martin is the guest of Mrs. John Williamson. A basketball match was played at Auroa on Saturday between the Auroa team and the Kaponga Convent girls’ team. The latter won by 9 to 7. The Auroa scores were made by Vera Rushin, M. Schwieters (2) and Joyce Lee (4). Scorers for the Kaponga team were Misses G. Behl, S. Bertie and Miss Madgwick. The captains were Misses M. Schwieters and G. Behl. Another of a very successful series of weekly euchre parties was held in the Auroa hall on Saturday night when a large number of visitors attended. The prize-winners were Mrs. Webby 1, Miss M. Julian 2; Mr. F. Greenbanks 1, Mr. Corey and Mr. Robin Walker equal 2. In the re-play Mr. Corey won. A competition for a set of custard glasses and a box of chocolates was won by Mr. Chester Ross. The master of ceremonies was Mr. H. R. Wood. > Mrs. Wood provided dance music. GENERAL ITEMS. Coal Shipment at Patea. Nearly 200 tons of Westport coal was discharged at the Patea wharf by the motor-vessel Inaha yesterday. The consigqment. which is the second in a comparatively short period, was for Patea and other South Taranaki consumers. Presentation to Mr. A. K. North. Mr. A. K. North before leaving for Auckland was made presentations by the principals and staffs of his former firm. He was entertained at afternoon tea, those present including Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Homer, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bums (Mr. North’s successes) and Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Coleman. On behalf of the staff Mr. C. R. Sturrock presented Mr. North with an antique cigarette case. Hockey Accident. Mr. Frank Gurney, who while playing for the Wanganui Y.M.C.A. team against Nolantown in the hockey tournament at Hawera on Monday, received what was at first thought to be a broken jaw as the result of a blow from a ball, has asked the Daily News to clear up what he feels is a misapprehension in the minds of several people that a Nolantown player was the cause of the accident. The mishap was entirely unpremeditated, said Mr. Gurney. The misapprehension had caused considerable distress to the Nolantown player. AN EPIC FILM. “ROYAL CAVALCADE.” Wherever and whenever the great achievements of talking pictures are discussed the epie film, “Royal Cavalcade,” produced to commemorate the silver jubilee of His Majesty’s reign, must be numbered among them. For this magnificent screen drama, brilliantly enacted by a colossal cast of England’s leading stage and screen artists, gloriously recreating the stirring cavalcade of Empire events during this momentous quartercentury in the story of Empire, has won the unbounded praise and admiration of the highest and lowest in the land. “Royal Cavalcade” will be presented at the Hawera Opera House to-day at a special school matinee at 3 p.m. and at 8 pan. and finally to-morrow. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. A kitchen tea will be tendered Miss Ruby King in the Auroa hall on Wednesday, June 12. Attention is drawn to an advertisement appearing in this issue of Mr. A. T. Schinkel’s sale of 69 dairy cows, horses and implements. The Jersey and Jerseycross cows, mostly young, are a choice lot in good condition. The fact of Mr. Schinkel having disposed of his property is the sole reason for the disposal of a choice herd of quality cattle. A carnival dance will be held in the Kapuni hall on Thursday, June 13, by the Young People’s Social Club. Particulars are advertised. The attention of readers .is drawn to the advertisement appearing in this issue of Mr. H. E. Alien’s sale of dairy cows and heifers at the Kakaramea saleyards next Monday. The. herd, which consists of young, fawn Jersey cows, is a choice lot. A kitchen evening will be given Miss M. Giacometti in the Okaiawa town hall to-morrow at 8 p.m. Particulars are advertised. ___________
