DELAY IN POLL SEQUEL STRANGE WELLINGTON RESULT. COUNCIL WITHOUT AUTHORITY. LATE DECLARATION OF THE POLL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The delay which occurred in making the final declaration of the city council poll has had an extraordinary result at Wellington. At a meeting of the finance committee of the council to-night the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said it was cotrect that a number of employees had been put off that day. During the last few months, he said, the council had carried a number of men on a curbing and channelling scheme. Authority was given to extend the scheme and it had been hoped to start work sufficiently soon to avoid displacing workmen. “Unfortunately,” continued the Mayor, “in the first place the unusual delay in bringing about the final declaration of the city council poll held us up. At the first meeting when we did meet we authorised the taking of the necessary steps to raise loan money. We are now awaiting an Order-in-Council. Had it not been for the delay we would have been at least a week ahead. The Order-in-Coun-cil will go through next Monday and, that being so, some of these men will be re-engaged.”
