AWAKINO DEFEATED
RUGBY IN TAINUI SUB-UNION-URUTI SHARES THE LEAD. The first round of Rugby games for the MacMillan Shield was concluded on Saturday in the Tainui Sub-union. At Awakino Uruti defeated Awakino by 9 points to 6 and at Mahoenui Mahoenui defeated Okau by 17 points to six. Mokau Maoris had a bye. . The meeting of the unbeaten Awakino team and Uruti was expected to produce some good football and it was one of the best games seen in the. district for some time. A superiority in forward play gave Uruti a well deserved victory. Both sets of backs adopted defensive tactics and the tackling at times was deadly. For the winners M. Agate and J. Oxenham scored tries and Turner kicked a penalty goal. C. Hepburn kicked two fine penalty goals for Awakino. Mr. K. Black was referee. In the Mahpenui-Okau match, the latter team was unable to field a full team. Mahoenui scored three tries and Petersen converted one and kicked two penalty goals. For Okau I. Johnson kicked two
