GOLF TITLE AT ELTHAM ABBOTT DEFEATED IN THE FINAL HIGHLANDS HANDICAP TO WARD THOMSON AND PEGG WINNERS L. Gibson, Eltham, won the Central Taranaki golf championship at Eltham yesterday, beating another Eltham player, E. L. Abbott, 2up and Ito play. The tournament was concluded on the Highlands course yesterday in perfect weather. Played for the first time over the 18 holes, the fixture proved easily the most successful that the Eltham club has yet held. The semi-final of the championship saw,the elimination of the two remaining visiting players, G. M. Chong (New Plymouth) and J. Stewart (Wellington). The ’ course was in excellent order throughout the three days’ play, the greens especially coming in for much favourable comment

At the presentation of trophies ceremony Mr. E. L. Abbott, the president of the club, thanked all the visitors who had helped to make the fixture a success. It was the first time that the club had been able to play the event over an 18-hole course and that had made the fixture all the more pleasant. He paid a special tribute to the work of the green warden, Mr. H. B. Gibson, and his assistants, and to Messrs. Quin brothers and the secretaries, Messrs. Clemow and McKay. Mr. L. T. Quin made reference to the visitors, some of whom had come all the way from Wellington. He called on Mrs. Abbott to present the prizes. The principal winners were:— Central Taranaki championship (Mr. A. O. Casey’s cup): L. Gibson, runner-up E. L. Abbott Highlands handicap: R. Ward. Eltham handicap: D. Thomson. Nimrod handicap: K. Pegg. Best qualifying score: E. L. Abbott Mr. D. Murie (Shandon, Wellington) in returning thanks on behalf of the visitors, stated that they had all had an enjoyable time and would like to play again next year.
