BIBLE CLASS RALLY

PRESBYTERIANS AT STRATFORD. NEW PLYMOUTH WINS FOOTBALL. From all parts of Taranaki Presbyterian Bible Class members assembled at Stratford yesterday to hold their June 3 rally. Over 220 members were present at the largest gathering for some years. Morning tea was given to the delegates on their arrival at 3.45 a.m. The morning service was conducted by the Rev. John Millar, who delivered an inspiring and helpful address. Speaking along evangelical lines he urged every member present to accept Christ as his personal saviour. He stressed the importance of devoting lives entirely to the living Christ, Who would direct their pathways, and lead them to victory. . Business meetings followed, and in the afternoon a seven-a-side football tournament was held. The contesting teams were very keen, and although the standard of football was.a little ragged ' each team displayed eagerness to obtain victory. The final game provided the brightest exhibition, it being a determined struggle between St. Andrew’s (New Plymouth) and Okaiawa. The .New Plymouth backs were superior, and their -eagerness to open up the game rewarded them with victory.

Results were:— First round: Eltham beat Pohokura 4-3; New. Plymouth beat Kakaramea 6-3; Stratford beat Fitzroy 8-0; Okaiawa beat Hawera/16-0. ’ < Second round: New Plymouth beat El-tham-3-0; Okaiawa beat Stratford 3-0.. Final: New Plymouth beat Okaiawa 3-0. The evening meeting was conducted hy the-Rev. H. Gould, who took for his text “looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our Faith.” Supper was pro- ’ vided the delegates at the conclusion of the meeting. GENERAL ITEMS. Lowgarth Fanners’ Field Day. Arrangements for pig and cattle demonstrations have been made by the Lowgarth branch of the Farmers’ Union. The demonstrations, which will be held at .Mr. A. Sulzberger’s farm next week, will be given by Mr. F. Ogle, Normanby, on pigs, and Mr. Morgan, Mangatoki, on .. cattle. May a Wet Month. Nearly double the rainfall for May, 1934, fell at Stratford last month, according to figures supplied by Mr. A. W. Burrell. Last month there were 17 wet days and 12.65 inches of rain fell, compared with 5.12 for the same period of last. year. Maximum falls were on May 1(1.30 inches), May 17 (1.32), May 22 (3.53) and May 29 (1.63). Ten-a-Side Postponed. ,-jjack of entries caused the postponement of a ten-a-side Rugby tournament at Ratapiko, which was to have been held yesterday. ... . ■ Salvation Army Boys’ Home. The Eltham Salvation Army Boys’ Home, received a contingent of 12 boys from Wallaceville at the week-end. The . Wallaceville home has been reopened as an old men’s hostel and the children ‘ apportioned between Eltham and Masterton. There are now 56 bqys at Eltham. ' ’What is wrong with New Zealand?” is the title of an address dealing with steps to improve the country’s position to be given in;the Eltham town hall tomorrow (Wednesday), at 7.30 p.m. by Mr. Geo. H. Buckeridge, Hawerai A concert and dance will be held at Mangatoki on Friday to aid the croquet club. Items will be contributed by Eltham and local artists. The Eltham Oddfellows will hold a .euchre party .to-morrow evening. Good . prizes are offered.*
