WEST END AND RAHOTU

BASKETBALL WINNERS BIG TOURNAMENT AT HAWERA. RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES. There was a record entry of 40 teams in the annual tournament arranged by the Taranaki Basketball Association at Hawera yesterday. This year the tournament was in two grades, senior and first grade, and was on the two-life system. There were 18 entries in the senior and 22 in the first grade. West End won the senior grade with Okato Tuis runners-up. Rahotu won the first grade event. In the semi-finals Okato Tuis defeated Eltham by two goals to nil. Eltham is a new team in the senior grade and showed some promising play, especially in the centres where the players intercepted well. Although Eltham had a fair share of the ball the goal throwing was not over accurate. The team, too, lost some points for being penalised fof- such breaches as personal contact and overguarding. In the final West End defeated Okato Tuis by seven goals to four. West End had not previously been beaten while Okato Tuis had been beaten earlier in the day by West End. The first half- of the game was very even, both sides Scoring the same, number of goals. Okato played a sure game and the centres worked especially well. The goalies, too, worked Well but at times played a little too much round the goal instead of towards it. West End played its usual fast game and showed some good pass- 1 ing. The Okato defence Was well Oil the alert and often broke up the West End combination. In the second half, however, West End forged ahead and soon had a lead Of three goals which it kept Until the end of the game. This was perhaps the best game of the day when both teams showed some spectacular passing. West End, However, was better at goal throwing. WIN WELL DESERVED. West End deserved a win as. for the last two years it has been runner-up at the annual tournament. The teams were:--West End: L. Fox, E. Fox, M. Duffin, H. .May, M. Urry, K. Skipper, M, Fletcher, E. George, M. Matangi. Okato Tui: W. Haylock, N. Goodin, M. Brophy, K. Goodin, R. Lawn, E. Richards, T. Wooldridge, G. Gibson, W. Bridgeman. . i Th'e team seems to be retaining the form of last year when it was the champion team and it was the second tournament the team has won this season.

Previous winners of the Tarry Shield, presented by Miss H. Tarry, were: 1931, Hawera Old Girls and Tariki; 1932, Convent Blue; 1933, New Plymouth High School Old Girls; 1934, Hawera High School Old Girls.

In the first grade Rahotu beat Tataraimaka .in the final Both teams are from the coastal division and are newly affiliated to the association. To enter the final was a remarkable performance. Until the sixth round New Plymouth Convent retained both lives but was beaten on the seventh round by Te Kiri and in the semi-final by Rahotu. Tataraimaka and Te Kiri were the teams in the other semi-final.

New Plymouth Convent defeated Tataraimaka in the fifth round while Te Kiri lost its first life in the fourth round when it played Clifton. , Both semi-finals were evenly contested. When the bell went fox - time Rahotu and New Plymouth Convent were level at 5-all. After the play-on Rahotu added another goal to their score. New Plymouth played well as did Rahotu. Both showed some fine passing and the’ goalthrowing, too, was fairly accurate. Both teams seemed fit and showed that they had been practising. Tataraimaka defeated Te Kiri by one goal, 5—4. Both were very keen and worked very hard. They were b6th good at intercepting but at times were apt to become rather rough. PLAY IN THE FINAL. In the final Rahotu defeated Tataraimaka by five goals to four. Rahotu is showing fine style and with some good passing. Rahotu is the more experienced team. Both teams intercepted well and played a good defensive game as well as a good attacking game. They were fairly accurate at goal throwing and, had the game been longer, it would be hard to say which would have won. The teams were:— Rahotu; P. Murray, R. Hodgson, D. Lowry, W. Murray, E, Clarke, H. Clarke, J. Pennington, J." Morgan and M. Baker. . Tataraimaka: M. Goodwin, F. McCabe, S. Price, M. .Coates, R. Gladwin, J. Sharrock, Lu McCardy, E. Penwarden. Referee’s for the day were Miss Simpson, Miss Matangi, Miss Tarry, Mr. Spufdle, Mrs. Verhey, Miss Chadwick, Miss I. Mischefski, Mfs. Knuckey, Miss J. Thomas, Miss Britland, Miss Smythe, Miss Wells and Miss J. Blair. . Other officers were: Timekeeper, Mr. Brett; scorers, Hawera High School girls; officials in charge of the draw, Mrs. and Mr. L. Kohn and Miss Abraham.

At the Conclusion of play Miss Tarry pretented the trophies to the winners, and congratulated both winners and run-ners-up on the splendid games, played. It .was encouraging, she said, to see so many entries and so-much keenness, especially among country teams, some of which had travelled Jong distances. Details of play are:— Senior.
