SANITARY INSTITUTE

SUB-CENTRE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. WORKERS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH. A sub-centre of the New Zealand branch of the Royal Sanitary Institute was formed at New Plymouth on Saturday. Mr. R. Day, chief borough inspector, was in the chair and there were present Drs. M. Champtaloup and Monaghan (Samoa), Messrs. F. Swindells, E. Collins, W. F. de Roo (Wanganui), F. B. Gardiner (Wellington) and Misses A 3 Jewiss and M. Corkill. The sub-centre includes Taranaki and Wanganui. About 11 full members and nine associate members were enrolled on Saturday. • ■ ; The secretary of the New Zealand branch, Mr. Gardiner, outlined th® constitution. of the institute in England. . In the Dominion four centres had ‘been es* tablished in the main and New Plymouth would be considered as a subcentre of Wellington, at least for the present. The. executive for the centres, which would probably apply also to subcentres, had to 1 include in its personnel representatives of local bodies connected with public health. Mr. Gardiner detailed the financial obligations of subcentres. ' ' Since its inception in July the New, Zealand branch had made excellent, progress, ■ and was issuing its own journal. It was hoped that the membership would soon reach 200, which would make the branch the largest overseas. Even now it was the second largest branch. Mr. Gardiner had been delighted and agreeably surprised to see the wonderful interest taken in the movement at New Plymouth and the large attendance at the evening meeting. :It showed that there were people there who would be willing to support the activities of the new sub-centre. Anyone who was engaged in- public health work of a particular standard,

anyone who i passed the institute examinations or any member of local bodies was entitled to full membership. Others, if they passed the institute’s, examination for sanitary .inspectors, could become associate members. At the present time, though it was an anomaly that required alteration, public health nurses were admitted as associate members only at a slightly higher fee. It was decided that the sub-centre officers should consist of a president, secretary and. four committeemen, two of which were appointed from New Plymouth and two from ■ Wanganui. The next meeting was to he held at Wanganui, and the time was left in the hands of the centre. ' Mr. F. Swindells, sanitary inspector, and Mr. E. Collins appealed for the continuance of support. Apathy was apt to set in very quickly, but it was unfortunate because every member would find much to learn by attending the meetings. Dr. Champtaloup expressed appreciation of the work done by Messrs. Swindells and R. Day. The election of officers resulted: President, Dr. W. R. Wade; secretary, Mr. F. Swindells; executive, Dr. Mary Champtaloup, Mr. R. Day and two more to be appointed from Wanganui.
