JUNIOR COMPETITION

NORTHERN DIVISION PLAY. SOME VERY CLOSE GAMES. Saturday’s series of matches saw some changes in the position of the teams in the northern division first junior. Rugby competition. Last week- saw~Tukapa, Old Boys, Star and High School all practically level, each having suffered only one reverse. Saturday, however, saw Tukapa the only one of the quartette to gain a clear-cut win, and the team now has a point lead over Old Boys, which drew with High School. Star was beaten by a narrow margin by Urenui and is now third four points below the leader. High School is still a point further back, but it has played only three matches against the leader’s five. A first junior match between Tukapa and Clifton at Pukekura Park ended in victory for Tukapa by 26 points to nine, Clifton’s score consisting of three freekicks. Bright Rugby was played throughout the game and gave the crowd plenty of thrills. F. George, Tukapa’s centre three-quarter, gave the best exhibition of any in his team, always being in position when he was needed, losing no opportunity of making the most of chances, and scoring many points for -Tukapa by his fine place-kicking. G. Newell and McKinney played good games at full-' back and first five-eighth, and Wyatt on the wing also' gave a good account pf himself. Clifton’s best men were-Sutton, and Wallis at. five-eighth and centre three-quarter, Wallis giving a good exhibition of kicking. In the first part play was fairly- even, the scor - at halftime being six to three, made-up of-a - try by Wyatt and a penalty goal by George for Tukapa, against a penalty kick. The score iriounted quickly in Tukapa’s fAY°ur in the second spell. Urenui had a very narrow, victory oyer Star, the issue being in doubt until the close. Ufonui had established a lead of 11 to seven, but near the call of time Star scored a try. Conversion would have meant victory for Star, but the kick failed. ‘’'/.I

In the third grade the position was not altered. Tukapa B defeated Old Boys and is in the lead a point ahead of Lepperton, which overwhelmingly defeated Urenui. Lepperton, however, has played one match fewer. Star, which has played the same number of matches as Lepperton, had a win by default over Clifton and is only a point further back. High School, though four points below the leader, is in a good position, as it has played only two matches against Tukapa B’s five and is so far undefeated. Tukapa B defeated Old Boys by nine to three. Parsons (2) an 1 Ellis scored tries for the winner, while O’Donnell scored a try for the loser. None of the tries was converted. In the fourth grade School A secured a narrow victory ove-. Tukapa. and though having played a match fewer is level with Tukapa in. the. lead. Star secured its first win and is two points further back.

In the fifth grade High School A secured a very narrow win oyer Tukapa and that, together with an easy win over School C during the week, places School two points in the lead, though it has played one match fewer. • Star is level with Tukapa in second place.
