RUN FROM FITZROY

NEW PLYMOUTH HARRIER CLUB. SPRINT RACE ALONG THE BEACH. The New Plymouth Harrier Club met at Fitzroy beach for the weekly run on Saturday. Twenty runners competed. Before the commencement of the rail a sprint race of about 100 yards was held along the beach. The winner was A. Thompson with M. Radford second. Such races are a feature of the weekly runs in the main centres and were held at New Plymouth last season, but so far this is the first occasion on which a race has been held this season. From now they will be held regularly. The pack for the run was controlled by H. S. Kingston, with A. S. Lander and H. R. Dingle pacemakers. The direction taken was along the beach to the mouth of the Waiwakaiho River, thence up the right bank of the river as far as th 6 quarries, across to Mangorei Road and down to the Henui River, which was crossed just below the Scout reserve. The leaders ran on down the ri’-erbank to East End beach. A run in was held along the beach back to the dressing sheds at Fitzroy. The distance of the run’was about six miles. Before changing one or two runners had a swim in the sea, which for the time of the year was surprisingly warm. Clark, an old member of the Auckland Athletic Club, competed in the run. Clark has been running for 42 years and even after that long period he is still keen enough to take his sport seriously. Next Saturday he will run in the annual Onehunga road race, a teams race which is open to all Auckland clubs. Next Saturday the four and a half mile handicap race will be run from the racecourse. The race is over one lap of the racecourse followed by otte lap of the championship course and finishing in front of the stewards’ stand. After the race a tea. will be held. The second of the club’s dances for the season was held on Saturday night and a good number attended. Messrs.- J. Crombie and V. Hodgson were masters of ceremonies. . Boulton’s Orchestra supplied the music.
