HAWERA-ELTHAM DRAW

e BRIGHT OPEN FOOTBALL CROWD DISPUTES LAST TRY. BOTH TEAMS’ GOOD TACKLING. Hawera and Eltham, six points each, drew after a bright, open and fast game. The match was one of the best Seen at Eltham this season. Eltham had a six-three lead for a portion Of the second spell, but Hawera evened the score as the result of a try which was disputed by a large portion of the crowd, it being claimed that Pehniall had forced the ball before Dowdle and Holloway came up for the latter to touch down. The referee, however, was of the opinion that Perihiall had missed the ball. Clapham was the first to score for Hawera, Whiting and Young securing a try each for Eltham before half-time. Playing in forceful style Elthatn backs made frequent unsuccessful attacks and they were unlucky not to; score Ori several Occasions, each time just lacking the finishing touches. Whiting played enterprising football. Hawera backs were scarcely as strong as Elthain, Although they would have often got through but for the splendid tackling of Eltham. Hawera was handicapped by injuries to Nowell and Clapham, who had to leave the field, and the back division was disorganised. Both in backs and forwards Eltham played a spirited game and although Hawera secured more ball from the scrums Eltham possessed an advantage in the loose, . Clapham was good.. Townsend and N. Huhter also were • hot at their best; Closely watched, Hunter, got little chance Of . getting into the open, but he made the second try possible as the result of a good break through. Eltham missed seven shots at goat and Hawfera three although several were easy kicks. Victory would have gone to the team with a sure kicker. The teams wore:—

Hawera:—Nowell; J. Hunter, N. Hunter, Clapham; Dymond, Dowdle; Guy; Holloway, Robinsori, Mcßeth, B. Murphy, Thomas, Garvey, E. Murphy, Brown. Eltham; Paterson; Smith, Young, Whiting; L. White, Townsend; Worthington; Leatham, R. Boeock, Potts, Rex and Ron Campbell, Pfenniall,-S. White, F. Boeock. Hawera opened strongly rind ne&rly caught Eltham napping. Faulty handling by both teams brought to naught many promising movements. Eltjtam; tried dribbling, but was unable to make much headway and the backs tried passing, but this, lacked the ■. necessary penetration. The Hawera backs lost a splendid chance by a forward throw. ' Leatham missed a penalty kick. / \V; Hawera stole a march on Eltham when Guy handed to Clapham from a serum. Clapham ran straight through, shortpunted and snappily followed up to touch down when the ball boiled over the line. Brown’s kick missed. Eltham immediately took a leaf out Of Hawera’s book and from a serum Worth-, ington handed to Whiting, who dashed through to score at the corner after shaking off a tackle. Loatham’s kick failed. . ' ■ .

F/Bocpck dame through the ruck and had a clear ,un iri, Kicking to the line he chased the ball rind would < probably have got; to it flrsit. had he- not ceased his run thinking the. whistle had-gone. J. Hunter reached the ball and an almost certain try for Eltham was thrown away* Young went through in good style and kicked to Nowrill/ whO : waa caught by Young arid received a dislocated shoulder in a hard tackle which necessitated his leaving the field. He Was replaced by McDonald. ' ' Clapham made a determined run towards the line but WaS obstructed, giving a penalty kick, Brown missing a goal. A great run by 'Smith, %. While and F. Bocoek'brought'play to' the line, but Bbcock was unable to pick up in front of the posts. Eltham was again unfortunate when- Whiting .rushed down and kicked across to Ron Campbell, who went over the line. However, there were too many, on him for a clean touch down and a force resulted. . . , /,

Hawera’s backs made many solid attacks and Eltham was lucky to escape. Townsend, Leathairi arid R. Boeock made an attempt to break through and Eltham. was again unfortunate at the corner, Townsend being unsuccessful in an appeal for a penalty for an alleged illegal tackle. Eltham’s efforts were rewarded when Worthing broke through from the ruck and handed on to Young, who scored. R. Boeoek’s kick missed. Hawera opened the second ripfell with aggressive passing runs; - but Eltham’s tackling was too solid. Townsend made a bold attempt to get through, but failed and R, Boeock missed a penalty kick.

Hawera backs made further attempts to get away and although their handling Was good Eltham tackled particularly well. Worthington tried a duriuny which nearly succeeded. /Smith was unsuccessful with a drop-kick. Clapham had to teave the field owing to injury. Fast, bustling work was seen for-some minutes, Eltham staging a pretty passing run which fizzled out as: Young could hot reach Smith's long pass. N. Hunter broke away well down the field and kicked over the line. A rush for the ball between Pehniall, Dowdle and Holloway left uncertainty as to whether the former forced. The referee’s ruling was in the negative and although Dowdle. .missed the hall z HoJloway was handy and touched down. Guy missed the kick. ■

Eltham staged several splendid attempts, S. White and R. Boeock once being almost within . the, posts. Whiting was nearly over at the corner and Hawera was in trouble when Paterson followed up a long kick to catch his man in possession. Dowdle broke away, carrying play right down thi field to catch Eltham’s defence weak. A knock-on saved Eltham from trouble. H.-.wera was seen in hot attacks for the final few minutes. Eltham 8 Hawera 6 Mr. G. Were refereed.
