THIRD CHAMPIONSHIP

FIREMAN BOYD’S GOOD RECORD. STRATFORD BRIGADE EVENT. For the third year in succesion the A championship of the Stratford Municipal Fire Brigade was won by Fireman R. Boyd at the annual championship events on Tuesday night. The championship contests 'have been held for four years and in the first year Fireman Boyd won the junior championship. The B championship was won by Fireman J. Davis after a run-off with Fireman H. Keller. Both events were run with a one-man dry coupling. Results were:—

A championship: Fireman R. R. Boyd, 555, 1; Superintendent L. B. Davis and Fireman D. Butcher, 58s, equal 2. B. championship: Fireman J. Davis and H. Keller, 575, equal 1, Messenger W. Davis, 68s, 3. In the run-off Davis secured the title with a time of 55 l-ss.

BOGEY MATCH DRAW. SENIOR AND JUNIOR WOMEN. The draw for the bogey match, of which Miss V. Sangster is in charge, to be played by women of the Stratford Golf Club on Tuesday, is:— Senior: Mrs. Ryan v. GENERAL ITEMS. Rain During April. Fourteen days in April were wet, according to records kept by Mr. A. W. Burrell, Stratford. The rainfall for the month was 6.82 in. compared with 7.52 in. for April last year. The biggest falls were 1.14 in; on the 22nd., 1.98 in. on the 23rd., and 1.44 in. on the 24th., so that 4.56 in., the bulk of the month’s rain, fell on those three days at Easter time. Man Proposes. . . • . Railwaymen who were taking steps recently to protect the supports of the bridge over the Manganui at Midhirst obtained a boulder weighing two tons and after much manipulation managed to place it so that it would divert the stream away from the abutment. They congratulated themselves on a good* job done but after the next fresh in the river they had every cause for lament, for the two tons of boulder must have been tossed downstream as though it were a pebble. In any case it had totally disappeared. Stratford Band Control. Through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Whyte, Miranda Street, Stratford, the Stratford band committee was entertained at supper after its monthly meeting on Tuesday night. On behalf of the committee, Mr. A. H. Trotter expressed thanks to the hostess. As the departure of several members soon after the opening of the meeting the attendance to less than that required for a quorum, little business was done. Mr. F. Foley jun. resigned the position of honorary secretary, and Mr. A. E. Sayers was appointed in his place. There were present Messrs. S. W. Whyte (chairman), A. H. Trotter, Foley sen., A. E. Pollock, L. J. Rowell, A. Voght, A. E. Sayers and Elliott.

Building in Borough. Building to the value of £1546 was commenced at Stratford last month according to the statistics supplied by the borough inspector, Mr. A. E. Sayers. Permits were issued for two houses, valued at £420 and £590 respective, three alterations and additions, and two garages. Tariki Withdraws.

The Tariki Rugby Football Club has withdrawn its first junior team from the central division competition and there will now be one team with a bye each week. To-day Midhirst will have the bye.

Eltham Football Club. The Eltham Football Club committee decided at a meeting to purchase numbers for the senior team and to issue match programmes with the players and their numbers. It was decided to donate a football each to the public and convent schools. The entering of a junior team in the Midhirst seven-a-side tpumament was left to the junior selector. Public Meeting Postponed.

Exceptionally heavy rain, after a day of,bad weather resulted in the postponement of the public meeting called at Stratford last night by the Stratford Poultry and Winter Show Association. Only a few members of the committee of the association made an appearance, and after a brief consultation with the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, it was decided to call the meeting again. Railway Euchre Party.

The Stratford railway staff held the weekly euchre party and dance on Tuesday night. Wright’s dance band played the music for dancing. Winners were. Mrs. Beale 1, Mrs. Jenkin 2, and Mrs. Alexander 3; Mr. Andrews 1, Mr. J. White 2, and Mr. Wehiepihana 3; consolation prizes, Mrs. J. White and Mr. Harris. Extras were played by Mrs. Mapp and Mr. Couch.
