LANDED, BUT LOST

A.D.C.’S FISHING EXPERIENCE. CATCH STOLEN BY BUSH CAT. First experiences in sport in a .new country are always interesting, and those of Captain Heber-Percy, A.D.C. to Lord Galway, and one of an angling party which investigated the swirling rocky pools of the upper Ngatiawa Stream, Wellington, recently, were no exception. He is a keen sportsman, particularly with rod or gun, and early in the day he landed two nice fish. Leaving these in the car, he set off to explore the Reikorangi, which, like many of the forest streams round Wellington, necessitates some climbing occasionally, to make detours round small gorges too deep to wade. To his delight he landed a fine-con-ditioned trout well over the average size to be obtained in Egland, and, placing it in his net, commenced the strenuous return journey. Anyone who knows this locality will realise that one’s attention must be centralised on stooping to avoid thick brush, crawling through supplejacks, and generally learning a little about progression through the bush. To his disgust, when he emerged into the sunlight again, he found that the fish had dropped out of the net. Search on the back trail proving fruitless, the angler went back to the car. The windows of the car had unfortunately not been closed, and when a big glossy bush cat leaped out on his approach he feared the worst. It proved true. He could not take the fish home, as all the edible portions had been taken by the cat, so in desperation he bought 81b of mushrooms from a small boy, and did not go home empty-handed.
