MALFROY DEFEATED

The New Zealanders suffered' defeat in the Bournemouth tennis tournament today. ... . . . Critics express the opinion that Perry’s game has improved. Despite Malfroy’s continued attack, Perry counter-attacked, forcing his opponent into many errors. Perry was so much the master that he was able to use any shot. Austin was shaky against Stedman and was down I—4 in the first set. The New Zealander pulled up from 2—5 to 5 —5 in the second set, hitting so well that Austin occasionally only had time to lob. Austin in the third set vigorously went for winners and outlasted his opponent. Miss Dorothy Round may have to scratch from the Bournemouth tournament, says the Daily Express. She won her singles to-day, but suffered from the leg muscle which she stretched last week. Results were:—

Men’s singles:—Second round: Austin (England) defeated Stedman (New Zealand), B—4, 7—5, 6—l; Perry (England) 1 defeated Malfroy (New Zealand), 6—4, 6—3, 6—2; Prenn (Germany) defeated Kirby (South Africa), 6—3, 6—3, 6—l. Women’s singles:—Second round: Miss Round (England) defeated Miss Riddell (England), 7—5, 6—l; Miss Scriven (England) defeated Mrs. Strawson (England), 6—2, 6—2; Mrs. Hopman (Australia) defeated Miss Scott (England), B—6,8 —6, 4—6, 6 —3. Women’s doubles:—First round: Mrs. Hopman (Australia) and Miss Ford (England) defeated Mrs. Houlder and Miss Maynard (England), 6—l, 6—3,

In the final of the men’s singles between Crawford and McGrath (Australia) the score was 9—ll, 6—3, 2—6, 9—7 when the match was abandoned to allow the players to catch the train for England. The match lasted three hours.

Both Crawford and McGrath were in wonderful form. McGrath held one match point. A gruelling three-hour battle left them two sets all.
