ANNUAL MEETING HELD. Prospects for the 1935 seasoh of. the Hawera Literary and Debating Society appeared bright when the annual meeting was held on: Monday night., Mr. T. M. Ellis presided over a large attendance. : . ”.-,7 . The. following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. E. Dixon; ' president, Mr. Malcolm Niccol; vice-presidents, Miss D. Bates and Mr.'E. L. Mulcock; secretary, Mr. A. F. Olsen; treasurer/.Mr. Mulcock; committee, Miss M. Bates and Messrs. T. M. Ellis, R. Mcßae-Fittal, C. Nicholson, O. V. Church, A.. H. Larkman. Seven new members were elected. Subscription for the year was fixed at 5s for seniors,- 2s 6d for juniors and 2s 6d for honorary members. It was decided to hold meetings as during the past season fortnightly, on Monday nights. ! ■ ■ - Mr. W. M. Egglestone urged the committee to stage debates on subjects of topical interest, such as armaments and quotas. He also urged the committee to arrange inter-club debates during the season. Mr. E. Kirkby recommended the society .to maintain contact with the Hawera Technical High School in order that the senior pupils might be encouraged to attend the debates. HAWERA BADMINTON CLUB. OPENING OF THIRD • SEASON. ' The' opening of the'third'season'of* tfie Hawera Badminton Club was held on Monday night, when a large number of players and visitors was present. The president, Mr. Rod Syme, in declaring the season open, referred to the difficulties experienced by the committee in. regard to membership, a surplus of nominations having been received. Reference was also made to tlie fact that on club nights, it was intended to inaugurate a closed “hour” for controlling play so that the best players would be mixed with the worst. 'ln the past, said Mr. Syme, it had not been necessary, and he trusted that the same spirit of happy co-operation among members would prevail this season.

AUROA DISTRICT NEWS. PERSONAL AND GENERAL ITEMS. Constable G. Surgenor. and Mrs. Surgenor, Auckland, have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hughes. Mrs. H. R. Wood has returned from a visit to relatives at Wellington. The condition of Mr. W. Stuart, who is in the Hawera Hospital, is gradually improving. Miss Grace Williamson is in the Hawera Hospital. Mrs. Woodhead is indisposed. . . Mrs. A. Kruse, Awatuna, has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. G. Eliason. Miss Vera King returns home to-day from an extended holiday in the north. The second of a series, of euchre parties was held in the Auroa hall on Saturday night, when, in spite of the rough weather, there was a large attendance. The euchre was under the management of Mr. H. R. Wood, while the dance music was played by Mrs. H. ,R. Wood. The winners of the euchre prizes were: Mrs. Stuart 1, and. Mrs. Rushin 2. Mr. J. M. Deegan and Mr. D. Mercer equal, Mr. Mercer winning the play off. The master of ceremonies was Mr. E. F. Sandford. The proceeds were in aid of the Auroa Croquet Club.
