BANKRUPTCY OF MAORI. DEFICIENCY OF OVER £lO3. A deficiency of £lO3 9s 9d was shown in the bankrupt estate of Kaake junr., otherwise known as Kaake Wallace, a Maori of Normanby, at Hawera on Tuesday. AR debts were owing to unsecured creditors and there were no assets. Kaake was examined as to the disposal of native rents and the official assignee (Mr. C. O. Pratt) was instructed to facilitate the discharge, provided Kaake paid £5O in satisfaction of the liabilities. The principal unsecured creditors are Wright and Lawrence (Stratford), £3l; A. H. Hills (Normanby),' £10; J. Kurta (Hawera), £10; H. Wills (Hawera), £ll 3s; Hawera Mineral Water Company, £9; A H. Corey (Hawera), £5 6s; Dr. W. F. Buist (Hawera), £5 ss. Kaake said he was a married man living with his wife and three children at Ketemarae pa, Normanby. He also helped to support his adoptive mother. He was a labourer doing casual work, which was scarce. Because he received rent from native lands owned by him, he could not register under the Unemployment Act. The total area of the land was about 112 acres, of which one portion was leased. There was a portion of 39 acres which belonged to Kaake and several others. The rent from, this area of 39 acres went to the Native Trustee to repay a mortgage. In the last twelve months he received about £l5O in rent, said Kaake. He also received about £4 a week for wages at harvesting time. He could have earned more had he not been compelled to cease work on account of illness. Three judgment summons orders had been made against him and as he had no means of paying, he had filed to prevent their execution.
