MATAPU HALL CONTROL

ANNUAL COMMITTEE ELECTION. The annual meeting of the Matapu Hall Society was held last week, when Mr. Seed presided over a fair attendance. The report and balance-sheet, which showed a credit balance of £7 11s Bd, was adopted. The chairman thanked the committee for its work and the women who willingly helped. Thanks were accorded the auditor, Mr. Barclay, and the secretary, Mr. T. Guy. A discussion took place regarding a hall committee and a social committee, and the general view was in favour of two committees being formed. I The caretaker was voted an honorarium' of £2 2s for his past week. The following committees were elected: Hall, Messrs. W. A. Guy, L. Preece, B. Barclay, R. Guy, H. Sharp, A,. Lobban, E. : Guy, H. Thomas, W. Seed; social. Messrs. A. Lobban, E. Guy, H. Thomas, R. Wallis, J. Calder, R. Thomas,. W. Murphy, with power to add. At a further meeting Mr. W. A. Guy was elected chairman and Mr. E. Guy secretary. It was decided to hold a series of euchre parties and dances.- Members of the committee donated prizes for the first evening. It was decided to hold a work-ing-bee at the hall at a suitable date. A working-bee was held at the hall on Monday, when necessary repairs were attended to.

Personal News. Miss S. Devon, Wellington, is the guest of Miss S. Gatenby. Mrs. H. Freakley has returned home from Riverlea. Messrs. J. Ramsay, Palmer Road, and H. Freakley, Te Ngutu, are attending Massey College for a week. Miss Watson, Auckland, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Seed. Miss Lunan, who spent the Easter holidays at Stratford, has returned to Matapu. Miss J. Finlay spent the Easter vacation in the Waikato.

MANAIA EUCHRE AND DANCE.

ST. PATRICK’S SOCIAL GATHERING.

The first euchre and dance of the season in aid of the parish funds was held in the St. Patrick’s hall on Tuesday night. There was a good attendance participating in cards and- dancing. The winners of the euchre prizes were Mrs. W. Baker 1, Mrs. E. Long 2; Mr. E, Lavery 1, Mr. D. Clements and Mr. H. Dalton tie. In the play-off for, the second prize Mr. H. Dalton won. Excellent dance music was supplied by Wills’ oi’chestra,' with extras played by. Messrs. M. Whalen and A. Elkington. An excellent supper was served by'the committee consisting of Mesdames H. Sutton, E. Long, J. Nicolson, W. Bourke and E. Vine. Mr. L. Hughes was master of ceremonies. Personal.

Mr. R. Hill, of the staff of the Manaia Post and Telegraph Department, has received notice of his transfer to Patea and will take up'his duties in the near future. . ■ Miss Appleyard, St. Helier s Bay, Auckland, who has been the guest of Mrs. E. S. Bennett, has returned to Auckland.

PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. L. O. Hooker, Hawera, will give a radio broadcast address _ from IYA, Auckland, to-night on social work in mental hospitals. Mr. A. J. Jephson, a member of the staff of the Hawera Post and Telegraph Department for the past 12 months, has been transferred to Wellington as postal messenger, and will leave shortly. Congratulations to the vicar, Canon D. B. Malcolm, on his election to canonry were expressed at the annual meeting of parishioners of St. ■ Mary’s Church at Hawera.

GENERAL ITEMS. Fire at Awatuna. A small cottage occupied by Mr. L. E. Martin, sharemilker for Mi - . S. Farquhar, Awatuna, was destroyed by fire about midnight on Tuesday. Nothing was saved and the occupants had barely time to escape with a few blankets. Dental Clinic Work at Hawera. Schools treated at the Hawera dental clinic during April included Hawera Convent, Hawera infants and main, Normanby, Tawhiti and Turuturu. The total attendance was 166 and operations performed numbered 562 (fillings in permanent teeth 99, fillings in deciduous teeth 234, permanent tooth extractions 2, deciduous tooth extractions 100, cleanings 72, miscellaneous operations 55). Hawera Jubilee Decorations. Jubilee lighting decorations were erected in Hawera streets yesterday by employees of the South Taranaki Electric Power Board. Coloured globes have been festooned above intersections and an illuminated sign of the word jubilee ‘hangs at the corner of High and Union Streets. Te Roti Euchre Party and Dance. The hall committee at Te Roti held a successful euchre party and dance on Friday evening, there being a very, large attendance. Mesdames Linn, Grierson and Parish were equal in points for the women’s first prize, a replay resulting in a win for Mrs. Linn, Mrs. Grierson being second. Mr. Stokes and Mr. Hockley were equal for the men s prize, a play-off resulting in a win for Mr. Stokes. Dance music was played by Mrs. Attrill, with extra dances by Mrs. H. Cleaver and Mr. Hansen. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Hurley and Mr. Ray Bloor, Mr. Smith and Miss Grierson being second. Mr. Hitchcock was master of ceremonies.
