Mr. George Arrowsmith, Auckland, is visiting New Plymouth, where he was formerly a well known resident. A London cable message reports the death of Mr. R. H. Menzies, of Sydney, former captain of the Killara Golf Club. The Rev. J. D. McL. Wilson is attending a military camp at Dannevirke. He will returned to New Plymouth on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Nicholls (Wellington), Dr. and Mrs. Myers (Wellington) and Mr. H. R. Brennan (Honolulu) are visiting New Plymouth and are guests at the Royal Hotel.. The condition of Mr. Eliot King, who is seriously ill at his home in New Plymouth, was reported last night to be slightly improved. Friends are requested not to ring his home except on urgent matters. Inquiries will be answered at telephone 1202. Sir Richard Rawdon Stawell, whose death is reported in a Melbourne cable,’ was one Of the most distinguished medical men of Victoria and a Reading authority on nervous diseases.

The Hon. S. G. Smith arrived at New Plymouth yesterday morning by , the special train from Auckland, accompanied by his private secretary, Mr. W. J. Shanly. Reference to the departure of Mr. W. A. Brown, headmaster of the West, End School, was made by - the president, Mr. J. Christoffel, at a bowling tournament at the West End Club’s green yesterday. Mr. Christoffel expressed regret at the loss of a valued member but wished Mr. Brown good fortune at Dunedin. P.D.G.M. Bro. E. Woodley, of the Loyal Eltham Lodge, left yesterday for Christchurch, where he will with P.D.G.M. Bro. S. Bollon of the Loyal Egmont Lodge, New Plymouth, represent the Taranaki District at the New Zealand Manchester Unity conference. P.D.G.M. Bro. J. M. Bates is also making the trip unofficially. Mr. G. N. Gordon, of the staff of the Central School, left New Plymouth on Thursday for England and the Continent. He is making the! trip primarily to widen his experience in educational matters. He will also visit his brother, who is an instructor in the Royal Air Force. He expects to be away from New Plymouth about six months.

Mr. J. B, Murdoch, Hawera, took his seat for the first time at a meeting of the Taranaki Land Board on Wednesday and was welcomed by the commissioner, Mr. F. H. Waters, - who said he was very pleased with Mr. Murdoch’s appointment, ft was gratifying that men of ability were prepared to come forward Jo accept these position. Mr. Murdoch commanded the respect of South Taranaki and would be a valuable addition to the board. Other members also welcomed Mr. Murdoch. The chairman of the Taranaki Land Board expressed his regret at the retirement of Mr. S. Blake, a member of 14 years’ standing, at the last meeting. Mr. Blake had been one of the most practical men on the board, he said, and had probably as sound a judgment of land and stock as anyone in Taranaki. He would be much missed in the board’s deliberations. Messrs. H. A. Foreman and C. J. Ryan also expressed their regret at losing Mr. Blake as a fellow member and it was decided to record on the minutes a motion of appreciation of Mr. Blake's valuable services.
