BIG EASTER SPORTS

TARANAKI WELL REPRESENTED. PROFESSIONAL ATHLETIC EVENTS. Several big professional sports meetings are being held in the North Island during Easter. Taranaki is being represented by prominent cyclists and runners at five meetings. , At Otorohanga on Easter Monday the biggest gathering held in New Zealand will take place. The total prize money exceeds £450 in cash and has drawn competitors from all over New Zealand, and Australia will also be well represented. An additional item included on the programme this year is tin-hare racing.. Taranaki will be represented by prominent New Plymouth wheelmen in J. Foote, C. Burke, C. Parker; T. Haw, G. Stevens and L. Stevens, and P. Wisnewski, Stratford, will also be a competitor. Taranaki runners competing are F. Telford (Oakura), G. Tuffery- and C. Lehrke (New Plymouth), and A. Low (Waitara).

Competitors at Te Kuiti to-day are L. Stevens, G. Stevens, C. Parker, T. Haw (cyclists), F. Telford, G. Tuffery, A. Low and C. Lehrke (runners). At the Whakatane sports to-day J. Foote, C. Pittains, L. Pittams, H. Eva and P. Wisnewski will compete, and T. Hookham and C. Burke will be at Waihi. At the Pio -Pio sports on Monday H. Eva, C. Pittams, L. Pittams and T. Hook-ham-Will be competitors. Several Taranaki sports enthusiasts are making the trip to Otorohanga on Monday, where some great cohtests should take place. Walsh and Turtill, members of the Australian cycling team at present on their way to England, will be making their appearance at the meeting The results of their contests with the cream of New Zealand’s cycling talent will be eagerly awaited. Splendid nominations have been received for the running and axemen’s events.
