RATES STRUCK

NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH. SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING. . A special meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held yesterday and officially struck the rates for the borough already announced. They are substantially the same as those levied last year. ■ Proceedings were brief and formal, the statutory requirements being covered in six legal resolutions to which the councillors agreed. Those present at the meeting were the Mayor (Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour) and Crs. F. J. Hill, F. S. Grayling, P. E. Stainton and J. Darby. The only other business transacted was the receipt of several small-matters arising from correspondence letters held over from or received since last meeting. A letter of thanks for the council’s co-operation in tljp arrangements for the New Zealand life-saving • championships was received from the Taranaki Centre of the Surf Life-Saving Society. Gate receipts on the .two days, the letter stated, were £32. 2s and £123 3s, a total of £145 3s lid. Expenses due to the flood and the change from Fitzroy to Ngamotu totalled £llO but this figure was not final. •- / A letter was received from the North Taranaki Hide, Skin and Tallow Buyers’ Association asking for co-operation in obviating the use of tar brands on cattle to b° slaughtered, as the stain permanently penetrated the hide. Paint was suggested as just as effective and harmless to the quality of the skin. The council referred the matter to the abattoirs manager with instructions to do what he could in the matter. It is understood that a permit for branding is being prepared for use at the abattoirs. Purchase of a hog de-hairer for use by the abattoirs department was left to the works committee with power to act.
