HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL

BOARD MEETING BUSINESS. METHODS OF STAFFING. The annual athletic sports meeting was held at King Edward Park, Hawera, on April 2, when the school was favoured with the presence of a most gratifying assembly of parents, stated the report of the / principal, Mr. J. .Dash, to the meeting of the Board of Managers on Monday night. The excellence of the organisation permitted the successful handling of a programme -of approximately 100 events. Four records were broken. To eliminate the possibility of undue strain and to permit specialisation in sprints or in distance events it was no longer essential for a boy to compete in all events from the 100 yards to the four miles of the steeplechase course. Championship competitors might now secure points in the high jump, long jump and the hurdles and in the three sprints or the three distance events. The ,

new system had so far given every satisfaction. • Certificates secured at the Associated Chambers of Commerce examinations in November last were recently presented by representatives of the Hawera chamber. The establishment of these certificates upon a firm foundation of general acceptability was greatly to be desired. Numerous bodies nowadays conducted examinations in commercial subjects; the return to the successful students depended on the standing of the examining body in the community. No difficulty was being experienced at the moment in securing openings in commercial houses for both boys and girls who had satisfactorily completed a course of training in the school. Employers were showing a partiality for the older pupils and were requiring not only a minimum standard l of general attainment but also a willingness to continue studies at evening classes. Evening classes this year had increased from nine to 13; enrolments show a very pleasing increase over last year’s figures. An application had been made for the earlier, departure of the bus from Kaponga and advice had been received that the request had been placed before the No. 5 Transport Licensing Authority.

Miss Jenkin terminated her connection with the school staff at Easter. Her conscientious work, her willingness to be of service, and her full participation in the life of the school caused her departure to be regretted both by the pupils and by her colleagues on the staff. The school acknowledged the gift of a football and a basketball from Mr. H. N. Lester. . A departmental circular advised that Monday, May 6. would be a general holiday and that a grant would be made to assist in providing on Friday, May 10, some suitable recognition of the King’s jubilee. The school would benefit to the extent of 4d a pupil. The matter was left in the hands of Messrs. Harding and Dash. Tn view of the difficulties met with in the organisation of the smaller technical schools with their numerous courses, the Minister be requested to amend the regulations to permit of their being staffed on the basis of one teacher to 25 pupils on the first "00 pupils.. This remit was framed by the principal and which, he suggested, should be forwarded for consideration to the annual conference of the Technical Schools’ Association. It was decided to forward the remit.

The question of endeavouring to secure additional accommodation was left in the - hands of a committee consisting of Messrs. Harding, Dash and Hobbs. Dr. Thomson and Mr. H. Collier were appointed a visiting committee for the month. Those ’ present were Messrs. J. W. J. Sar ding (chairman), J. B. Murdoch, A. aleman, P. O. Veale, J. C. Barclay, T. C. Hobbs, L. A. Jennings, Mrs. J. W. J. Harding and Dr. W. M. Thomson.
