ARGENTINA’S VIEW

RESTRICTIONS UPON BEER

HOLDING BRITISH MARKET

BEST ARTICLE PRODUCED

EXPENSIVE EXPERIENCE

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright

London, April 14.

An illustration of the Argentine viewpoint regarding the restrictions on beef imports was given by Sir James Caird, chairman of Smithfield and the Argentine® Company, at a meeting yesterday. Sir James expressed the opinion that as long as Argentina maintained her breed of cattle and chilling factories and was permitted to exercise her long and expensively acquired experience in producing exactly what the British public wanted, there was little fear of the loss of the British consumer as a buyer of Argentine chilled beef. Argentine beef-raisers had never wavered in their determination to produce only the best article possible, he said. They achieved this by coming to England for the last 40 years and purchasing a large number of the best bulls bred by Britain at extraordinarily high prices, sometimes giving 3000 guineas for yearling bulls.

Sir James declared that the Argentine could supply an article of even quality for the whole 12 months of the year. The/ Cunard Line’s annual report refers to the company’s interest in the Australian and New Zealand chilled beef trade, for which further vessels are being fitted. The homeward cargoes have been comparatively good despite quotas restricting the refrigerated cargo. The report expresses a hope that the London conversations will dissolve the difficulties.
