FITZROY GARDEN PARTY
BENEFIT FOR KNOX CHURCH. In spite of the windy weather there was a large number present in the sheltered grounds of the Presbyterian manse, Fitzroy, on Saturday when a garden party was held under the auspices of the Knox ladies’ guild for the church funds. An enjoyable afternoon was spent with games, competitions and in liberally patronising the Various stalls. The stalls, which Were well patronised, were in charge of the following: Sewing, Mesdames Coulter and Tannahill; produce, Mrs. Francis; cakes, Mesdames Caiman and Woods; sweets, Bible class girls; men’s stall, Messrs. Peterson and Short; afternoon tea, Mesdames GOvertlock and Craig. Mr. A. Peattie was in charge of the gate. Great interest was taken ifi the competitions. Mrs. Smart was in charge of a treasure hunt won by Mr. F. Smeaton, Mrs. Collins conducted skipping competitions, which Were Wbn by Mary Short (girls) Bill Peterson (boys) and Mr. H. Peterson (men). A “Hdw-dO-you-dd?” competition in charge of Mrs. Gould Was won by Joan GOUld with 46 introductions.
Musical items were given by Miss A. Ward (pianoforte solo) ahd Misses Cocker and McNeill (vocal sOlos). The Rev. H. Gould announced that the garden party was being held on the anniversary of the opening of the Sunday school 11 years before. The founders, Miss Rea and Mr, N, K. McDiarmid, were both present and .were applauded. Mr. McDiarmid thanked the assembly for its welcome. He rejoiced in having shared in the beginning of the Work at Knox Church, especially in the success of the Sunday school which, commencing with a roll of 11, now numbered ovef 100 scholars. He urged all present to recognise the importance of the work of influencing the young people for Christ, Mr. Joe. Short, one of the first scholars, who is now a Bible class sub-leader, was commended for his persistence in well doing. A vdte of thanks was accorded those who had helped towards the success of the gathering, special mention being made 6f the assistance of Messrs. A. Peattie, H. Smart and A. Short and Mr. and Mrs. Gould for use of the grounds.
