ELTHAM RACING CLUB
CONCLUDING MEETING HELD. DISPOSAL OF THE FUNDS. Not many people are perhaps aware of the existence of such a body as the Eltham Racing Club. The organisation has had a quiet life for the past 15 years, although not carrying on actively. It was in 1920 that the club was formed and an inaugural meeting held. This took place at the Hawera racecourse in May, as Eltham had nd course of its own. The meeting proved a success, about £6O profit resulting. Soon after that the matter of race allocations was taken up by a Racing Commission, and as there was little prospect of Eltham being able to provide a course of' its own a recommendation was made against the issue of a permit and the club had to go into abeyance.
The conditions relating to race meetings since, then have offered no encouragement to'revive the club, and recently it was considered advisable to wind up the organisation and dispose of the funds which had accumulated and amounted to about £9O.
Several residents considered the new Plunket room would be a worthy object for the money and a proposal to this effect was brought forward at a meeting of the club on Saturday. There was a good attendance of members. It was decided to donate' £BO to the Plunket Society and £lO to the Eltham Pipe Band, the balance to be used, for liquidation expenses. An amendment to devote part of the funds towards another charitable object was suggested by Mr. H. B. Gibson, but was not supported.
