JERSEY BREEDERS

MEETING OF THE CATTLE CLUB. LACK OF ENTRIES FOR CLUB SALE. Owing to a lack of entries it would be impossible to hold either the national or club sale this year, reported the chairman of the New Plymouth Jersey Cattle Club at a meeting yesterday. There were present Messrs. H. C. Sampson (chairman), E. Griffiths, G. H. Bell, F. D. Ballantyne and P. J. Petersen.

The club was always anxious to introduce variety at the field days, said Mr. Griffiths. He suggested that elimination tests be held instead of the usual procedure. Members agreed that it was essential to hold the days on properties where good herds were kept so that there would be suitable animals for demonstration. It was decided that a remit concerning the qualifications for a champion but-ter-fat bull should be framed by Messrs. Bell and Griffiths for submission to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Cattle Breeders’ Association.

The fence for the Jersey ring at the showgrounds was seriously damaged by the recent flood, said the chairman. So far it had not been re-erected, though members had straightened the iron. Scantlings would be required if it were to be repaired. It was decided that the repairs must he done. A working bee was arranged. Mr. Petersen presented £1 towards the cost of re-erection. Votes of thanks were passed to the Taranaki Jockey Club, Messrs. J. Blewman (caretaker for the jockey club), M. D. Murray (judge), W. B. Grant and J. Shepherd.
