While racing clubs in South Australia generally have been complaining about dwindling attendances, trotting is ex? periepeing a boom, especially ing, and crowds of 16,000 are common at the trots on the showgrounds gt Ade? laide on Saturday nights. For years owners raced their trotters at Adelaide for small trophies, and were uijable to back their horses except on, the sly, because not only were bookmakers illegal, but the totahsator was restricted to galloping fixtures. When legislation was enacted enabling the totalisator to operate at trotting meetings the boom began and raised' the ’nightly attendance from 3000 to 16,000 ’ The totalisator unit of investment is 2s. The sport has made a great appeal, a remarkable feature being that the pre-, portion of women to men is far greater than on the galloping courses. The'trot? ters definitely have a greater attraction for Adelaide people than the gallopers. The reasons advanced for this are the lower admission charges, the lower unit of investment on the totalisator, the fact that the smaller track give? patrons a better view of the races than at turf fixtures, and the fact that night meetings attract many people who prefer to-spend their Saturday afternoons at cheaper forms of sport than racing, but yet find night trotting a welcome diversion. The success of the trots is a boon for the Royal Agricultural Society, which receives £IOQ a night for rent for the grounds, Recently a trotting handicap- for women riders was staged, and proved a popular attraction.
