WAITARA HARBOUR

MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. REPAIRING FLOOD DAMAGE, The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbour Board was held on Friday night. Members present were Messrs. J. Hine (chairman), D. T. Wiley, I. G. Prichard, H. Hpufdle, E. C. Jones, W. R. Johns and J. Vickery. Notification was received from the Marine Department that Mr. W. R. Johns has again been, appointed a member of the board. .Mr. Johns was congratulated on his re-appointment. Mr, C. F, Dpwsett reported that the main repairs to the river side of the north wall , had been satisfactorily completed. Work could only proceed at the lowest tides and then only during brief periods. Consequently progress had been slow. The cavities filled were fairly extensive as eight tons of cement and over 50 cubic yards of shingle were used in the work. Two small apertures needed further attention and would be attended to when the tides permit. The harbourmaster, Capt. T. J. Wood, reported that the depth of water on the bar was eight feet at high water neap and ten feet six inches at high water sprihg tides. The channel ovei- the bar was still to the northwards. The auxiliary scow Tamahae arrived from Auckland on April 4 and the vessel was engaged in the Mokau trade. Railway employees had lifted the railway line back to its normal position on the filling behind the wharf, the board supplying gravel for the job. Permits were issued for the removal of 71 yards of stone and shingle from the beach during March. Erosion had occurred on the river bank under Devine’s Building, several of the short concrete piles being dislodged. Repairs to the river bank and south wall were left to the works committee with power to act. Tenders were received for building an 18ft keel boat which had been accepted. It was left to the works committee to act in connection with damage caused by the recent flood under Devine and Co.’s building. Mr. Spurdie stated that the cliairman had handled the matters of the board in an able manner afid proposed that he be voted an honorarium of £5O. This was seconded by Mr. Johns and carried. Mr. Hine thanked the board for the vot<® He was again offering his services as a candidate but wished to say that it would most likely be the last tune that

he' would do so. He trusted that all the old members would again be candidates. It was reported Mr. Wiley would not be a candidate at the forthcoming election and he hoped that Mr. Wiley would reconsider this decision. ■
