ANOTHER CONSTABLE
CONSIDERATION AT HAWERA. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETS. A decision to urge the stationing of a constable of the Hawera police force permanently at the station at nights to answer telephone calls was made by the Hawera Chamber of Commerce at the last meeting. Reply was received from the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, that the appointment of an additional officer was being considered. During the night, there was no officer at the station, it was stated, and Mr. E. K. Cameron said it was only recently that the telephone was switched over to the sergeant’s residence at night. The suggestion that a committee to run the farm school should consist of two representatives of the chamber of commerce, Farmers’ Union, borough council, Egmont A. and P. Association, Hawera Winter Show Company and the South Taranaki Herd-Testing Association was made by the South Taranaki Herd-Testing Association, through the secretary, Mr. E. M. Bardsley. The opinion of the chamber was sought on the matter, and an assurance was given that financially the school would be selfsupporting. “The matter is one of great importance to the town and I think we should support it,” said Mr. Cameron. After discussion it was decided to hold the matter over to a larger meeting of the chamber.
Those present were Messrs. E. K. Cameron (president), E. M. Bardsley, T. M. Ellis and E. Dixon.
