MANAIA BUSINESS MEN
TELEPHONE FACILITIES. A general meeting of the Manaia Business Men’s Association was held on Tuesday evening. Mr. R. L. Bennett sided over a good attendance. It was decided to approach the Hon. J. Bitchener and the member for the district, Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, when the Minister visits the district at the end of the month for their support to the association’s request for a penny in the slot telephone service, also for an extension of the Sunday telephone service from 9 a.m. till 9 p.m. Mr. Overton, of the South Taranaki Power Board, is to be invited to the association’s next meeting relative to community shop-front lighting at Manaia. The following were appointed a reception committee to meet the Minister and Mr. Wilkinson: Messrs. L. C. Harrison, W. Armitage, L. A. Walters, G. R. Watts and J. Rodie. MATAPU CRICKET CLUB. SUCCESSFUL DANCE HELD. The Matapu Cricket Club held a dance in the hall on Monday evening, when there was a large attendance, including visitors from Stratford, Eltham and Hawera. Music was played by Vinsen’s orchestra and an extra dance by Mr. Thompson. A novelty dance was won by Mr. W. Curd and Miss P. Robertson. Supper was served by the members of the club under the supervision of Mesdames Guy, Hogan and Robertson, and Miss Riley. PATEA PRIMARY SCHOOL. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The hope that' parents would send their children to the Anzac Day service during the Easter holidays was expressed by members of the Patea school committee at a meeting on Thursday. It was decided to ask Lieut. R. W. Haddow to address the children next Thursday. Concerning the King’s jubilee celebrations it was decided that the chairman, Mr. R. E. Moore, and the secretary, Mr. G. Marshall, be a committee to co-oper-ate with the Mayor in any Patea effort and that other schools in the district be invited to participate. The head teacher, Mr. C. P. Bates, reported a roll number of 176. An inspection of the school was made on March 29 and 30.
