VIEWS ON CURRENT TOPICS WEST END SCHOOL JERSEYS. f. ~ ~ " • REASON FOR RECENT DECISION. (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln yesterday’s Daily News a correspondent asks, why red and grey bands instead of red and grey hoops are suggested for the West End school jerseys. The answer is in order to avoid, as far ns possible, any. confusion when playing a school using one or other of the West End colours. That such confusion is possible we know from experience. However, if a better pattern.in the above colours, is suggested it would be wel- - cemed. —I am, etc., W. A. BROWN, Headmaster, West End School. New Plymouth,. April 13. EPSTEIN’S LATEST STATUE. (To the Editor.) Sir,—Your correspondent “Lover of Christ” seems upset about Epstein’s statue of Christ.' Might I ask your correspondent where he gets his idea of Christ’s appearance? We must remember that Christ died (according to. the Bible) about 2000* years ago, since when we have had to depend on very doubtful “photography” to carry his . image through the ages, and ,Epstein’s idea (to my mind) is just as likely to be correct as that of “Lover of Christ” or any modern Christian magazine. Again, would a celebrated sculptor such as Epstein not have access to pictures just as “beautiful” and “life-like” (?) as “Lover of Christ” saw in his Christian magazine? —I am, etc., QUERY. Hawera, April 13. (To the Editor.) Sir,—l am afraid I cannot let the letter signed by “Lover of Christ” on the above subject go unchallenged. It is entirely one-sided. It is pleasing to notice that Jacob Epstein has ah army of admirers of his statue 'of Christ. Epstein, like all genuinely clever men, has stirred the mind to. action and stimulated the interest in Christ. The sculptor must hold a good thought for every curve and line that is cut from his work. Well-meaning people have been asked to scorn this statue, but really wellmeaning people will discover in it not the Christ of Holman Hunt’s depiction, but the sad and sorrowing Christ grown old at man’s indifference to Him. Epstein must desire a good interpretation to be placed on his work. If Epstein’s grotesque statue of Christ, depicting Him as One of sorrow, despondency .and forlorn hope, is correct, then Christianity is doomed, and the teachings, example, precept and so-called sacrifice have all been in vain.—l am, etc., HUMANE. New Plymouth, April 12. /
